Frost Heave Asphalt Driveway Crack Repair

I have these really wide cracks in my drive. I have tried different asphalt products with little success. Looking for recommendations on any products that work better

This patched before with latex it I bought in bucket. The separation as you can see has continued to widen.

You've got a lot more than just frost heaving going on there.

Frost heaving damage is purely vertical, that gap is caused by horizontal movement. There could be several causes of this including too much moisture in the base (maybe caused by the crack letting in too much water), excessive (trucks.) loading causing the base to shift from dynamic loads, etc., etc.

It seems that whatever is causing it is still present since the gap continues to widen.

Without more info and / or pictures it's just a guessing game.

Murf,

Yes there is really no vertical lift so it is not like a concrete road that lifts at the joints in winter, that is called a heave.

But the crack does widen in the winter it runs straight across the the full width of the drive.

The Latexite filler that you see in the middle of the crack feels pretty tight, not loose. I thought I would have to break it up nonetheless and I was thinking of filling the 3+inch gap with QPR from Lowes.

Nearest crack to this one is about 150 feet away and was caused by me sawing the driveway to run an invisible fence wire many years ago. The original cut was about one quarter inch wide and less than an inch deep in asphalt that was more than 4 inches thick. Now it has cracked to full asphalt thickness and has widened to a gap about 2 + inches wide.

These cracks are in 17 year old pavement. The one in the photo is the main one of concern and has been widening from its birth about 16 years ago.

I would get a true asphalt emulsion. Fill the crack with it and spread sand on it.

Then true asphalt will continue to melt during the summer and flow. You may have to sprinkle sand on it often.

You are not going to fix the cracking. As it ages it's going to shrink some. Be glad it not all broken.

Are you suggesting using Roofing Emulsion like Henry 107? Or one those emulsions for driveways that come in gallon jugs?

I think the roofing tar would fill it the cheapest based on how wide it is. Those little driveway jugs are for narrow 1/8 to 1/4 max.

That said if it is a residence that roof stuff will result in a lot of tracking it be big mess til next winter and then some. It is a liquid that melts at lower temps. Most crack seal is hot seal on low temp tar.

I think you should pull out the old material and put a couple bags of bag asphalt and tamp it down. It will crack again but you will not fall into the crevice
