Siding costs seems high to me

Just received my "Sears" estimate for white vinyl siding with 1/4 inch insulating board placed over the top of my clapboards. $15k seems a bit steep to me, going after another estimate from a city contractor that hawks an insulating board that conforms to the shape of the vinyl, making it less prone to destruction. I think I could do cedar for less!

The thing about Sears siding is two companies are making money off the installation. Sears sets up the deal using numerous contractors. You pay Sears and Sears pays the contractor. It's a lot cheaper to hire a contractor yourself. It's the same way with there AC, water heaters or anything else they sell and install.

I'm not sure I explained this so you can understand it but maybe.

Easy enough to understand that. I asked the man if the installers were Sears or subs, he said Sears. I hate this whole process. Still waiting for my Mennonite builders to call me, their price and honesty can't be beat and they work in cedar as well. They are just so busy it is like pulling teeth to get them here.

Cutter, unless you have a difficult two story situation why not do it yourself. once you have the corners and window trim on the siding its'self is kinda fun to put on. Last time I checked around here the better quality vynil (it's not all the same) was about $60.00 per square. The trim allways seemed to cost more than you'd think, but with your own labor, and perhaps a relative who could stand to work off a few pounds the savings would be substantual. good luck.

I have never been a good finish carpenter. I can rough a deck or perform as a helper when installing windows, doors etc...but do not have the desire to attempt something I know nothing about. Give me a boat, an engine, some wiring, plumbing or just about anything else around the house and I am gung-ho. If I don't have any luck with the estimates, I may hire a fellow worker that carpenters on the side(if he is willing) and serve as his helper for the project.
