Just brought home an HP windows laptop with Vista. Nothing is easy. Couldn't get it running with wireless - it did work with my wired network. I figured it was because of my encryption settings. I spent 3 hours looking for security settings but couldn't find them. Noooo - everything is automatic in Vista. Ended calling HP help (India) and they uninstalled my wireless drivers so that they would re-install correctly. Then wireless worked. Automatic is great as long as everything works. The jury is out.

If they can't make it automatic and 100% reliable they really should have an easy to get to manual configuration mechanism. My idea of easy configuration is ascii text files that hold the configuration parameters and don't change every time windows gets a bug up it's butt. I really, really hate it when there's a layer of fat software preventing the user from seeing or changing the configuration manually.

Yeah, now my HP LaserJet 1012 does not work on Vista. HP Web site says it is supposed to be supported. But it is not in the Vista list when I go to add the printer. The printer is on another computer and shared and the Vista computer sees it - but when I click on it it sends an error message. I read on the internet that other people with the HP 1012 have this problem also and that HP says Microsoft has to fix the problem.

That reminds me of my recent Norton Internet Security problem. The softare wouldn't install due to the fact a 'variant of Norton Internet Security" was found on my PC. Gave no detail of 'what it found'. After following the tech support removal directions, 6 hours (over 2 evenings) of tech support (India) running my PC remotely, removing registry entries, etc - it never would install.

I gave up, got a refund from Norton. I just couldn't believe there wasn't a utility that would either prompt or dump the info. to a text file about what the software was finding on my PC. It's like they're trying to beat microsoft for the "worst programmers award."

Jason

Annbrush - ha! Yep I'm not the only one having problems. I just returned the HP laptop with AMD processor since I was going to have to call India again to get my wireless working. I exchanged it for a Lenovo with Intel dual core 1.6mhz, 2 Gig memory. It is much faster and no more problems with wireless. I wanted to give a non-IBM a try but it didn't work out for me. Don't get Vista without factoring in the 2 gigs memory.

I still haven't managed to get my HP 1012 laser jet working. I even tried setting it up as a network printer. I will return the linksys wireless print server hardware I just bought. At this point it will just be cheaper to buy a new printer. Unless I can figure out how to manually configure the printer.

I finally found a post on the internet which helped me get the HP laserjet working. I am in business with Vista now. I must say that the tractorpoint window fits the laptop widescreen quite nicely.

I was going to go with Vista on my new (Dell) laptop also, but my IT person told me not to touch it or else start looking for a new IT person. So Sad

Since she's a really good cook, and looks after me very well, I decided to stay with XP Pro. Wink yeah right

Best of luck.

Murf, we know who the "XP Pro" is. Or is that the "TP Pro"?

So far I have found Vista to be less stable than XP (big surprise!). I have it connected to my home LAN with other XP computers. Every day I come home from work I have to restart the printers for my wife (who uses the Vista laptop) which are connected to my main XP computer. The printers are working fine for the XP computer. Today I had to restart my router for the Vista laptop. All the XP systems were working fine.
