What Insect is this Giant Bees

Hi,

We have these Giant insects, that borrow large holes all over the yard. They are about 2.5 inches long have clear wings large fat bodies, maybe some green or yellow banding on the body. My wife thinks they are Giant Japaanese Hornets. She saw one of them dragging a grasshopper into its borrow. She says if its one of these they have a very bad sting, flesh eating, and destroy honey bees.

Here is a picture of the holes they dig, I put pencil next to it for perspective.

They are making a mess of the yard, sidewalks, they have holes everywhere.

Do we have cicadas in NJ? This is a picture of one. The insects in my yard look similar, have to get a pix of one of them going into its borrow at home.

Dennis,

I think what you have is "Specius speciousus" or commonly called Eastern Cicada Killer, other than making a mess, they're no threat to humans.

If anything their voracious appetite is a big help to farmers.

Have a look at the link.

Best of luck.

Murf,

The my piles look exactly like the the Cicada killer piles. Funny my wife and I were saying how we have not had any Japanese beetles for the last two years. Now we have these guys.

What a mess they make and these guys are digging next to the walkways just like the article you linked said.

Weird how we never had them for 14 years in this house, two years ago we had our first carpenter bee visit. Must be all those flowering things my wife plants So Sad

Sorry Dennis, you're going to have to come up with a better excuse than that for getting out from under the 'Honey-do' list of gardening. Wink yeah right

They just go in population cycles like the prey they feed on. It must be a good year for cicadas and or grasshoppers down there is all.

Best of luck.

We Had Cicadas Really Bad This Year In SC, Especially On Or Near Lake Murray....They MakeGREAT STRIPER BAIT! Anyway, The Tale Is...They Only Come Out For a Visit Once Every 13 Years, So See You In 2024! They Do Shed a Cool, Very Distinctive and Detailed Hard Shell/Skin On Trees, Especially Pines!
