 F-250 SD 7 3L Diesel Engine help

Need some help for my 2000 F-250 SD with 7.3L Diesel. It's developed an aweful squeel in the front of the engine. It's something that turns as it fluctuates with RPM. The truck has a new water pump (old one exploded badly) and I just replaced the alternator 1 week ago (it died). It has 135k miles. any ideas? I'm having trouble tracking it down.

I pulled the top idler pulley Sunday but the bearing there is not loose or makes noise when I spin it by hand. I'm worried the compressor or pwer steering pump may be going considering the major components that have all died within 7-8k miles of each other (water pump & alternator).

Could be a bad bearing on the belt tightener. Turbos also have bearings.

When one of ours have had that squeal it was always the spring-loaded serpentine belt tensioner.

They're dead easy to change and not much money.

BTW, you can't tell they're bad by just turning them either. We went round & round on the first one, after much unsuccesful diagnosis we went with the dealers advice and just replaced the tensioner. That was the culprit.

Best of luck.

Murf, I've been suspecting the tensioner. Did you change out the whole tensioner or just the pulleys w/ bearings? I've tried to look on the net for finding the pulley's but haven't been successful so far.

I'm willing to spend the money and swap out those parts if it's reasonably priced. Heck, the squeel drives me nuts and I hate to give the Dodge & Chevy boys ammunition.

I had a Mercury Mountaineer with about 135,000 miles that started squealing. A shop replaced the tensioner. Same thing happened about a month later. Let it get so bad that it stopped rotating. Engine started to get hot! Had it towed and found out there were 2 tensioners.

Actually, before I get too far, there are 3 miscellaneous smooth pulleys on the engine. 2 are on the tensioner and one at the top. Is there any way to figure out which one is doing it? I don't have one of those stethoscopes some mechanics use for isolating noise.

I checked the local parts supply place and they have one in stock. I'll just pick it up and swap out at least one pulley. If the noise exists, then onto the next one I guess.

The tensioner is an assembly, pulley, bearings, sprung arm, everything in one.

I grumbled at first, but the parts man said if the bearing was shot the spring was likely not at spec. either anymore, hmm, good point. Besides, the bearing is a press fit affair, and like as not I'd break something trying to either pull the old one out or press the new one in.

That said, also check the belt itself. If the belt is getting old and hard, or there is an accumulation of dirt on the smooth side it will do the smae thing. On these trucks the back side of the belt is the driving side for certain devices in the system.

Best of luck.

I am sure you have checked the fluid in your power steering pump. I had a Ford that is even a little low it would do the same.

I think you will post it was the tensioner assembly also.

I'd STOP THE ENGINE when it is only moderately warm. If you place your hand on each of the tensioners, the bad one should be warmer than the rest.

I piece of thin tubing can act as a stethoscope. You don't need both ears. I used to keep a piece of the thin PVC clear flexible tubing they used on fish tanks in the tool box. For comfort you can use a disposable ear plug with a hole in the middle hold the tubing in the ear.
