 Rotary Broom for Ford Ranger

Anyone ever seen a rotary broom manufactured to fit a Ford Ranger? I've contacted Sweepster and a few other companies with no success. They say min 3/4 ton pickup, 1 ton recommended to install their brooms. Does anybody know of a shorter-short line company that might have such a thing for a smaller truck like the Ranger?

How about a tow behind with it's own engine?

I'm not sure what a rotary broom weighs but if you have a manual tranny in that Ranger you need to be careful. The Ranger has a very weak manual transmission - if I had to guess I'd say it came straight out of the Escort.

A local line painting company has several of them on mini pickups.

They run a snowplow mounting harness on the truck, the broom is slightly customized to fit the snowplow mount.

They are hydraulic drive, the power comes from a Honda-powered pump and BIG reservoir and cooler in the box of the truck. The reservoir and cooler are critical to reduce the heat.

Best of luck.

Ken, I doubt it came from an Escort, they're front wheel drive.

I think it's a Mazda unit, like most of the rest of the vehicle.

Forgot the smiley, but you get the idea. It's not a very strong transmission. The tow rating is a lot less with the manual than with the auto. I could tell you how much if my Ranger (and the owners manual) weren't in the shop for the third time in three weeks.

Ken, maybe you should try taking it to a MAZDA dealer...

They might have a better fix, or fixes, for it.

Yours must be a Monday or Friday unit, one of my employees had one of the few diesel Rangers they ever built, they only thing it could pass was gas station but it ran forever, he finally had to part with it after the frame rotted through.

Best of luck.

If someone (preferably Toyota or Ford) would make a diesel compact pick up, that got the mileage my Jetta TDI got, I'd buy it in a heartbeat...and I bet I wouldn't be the only one...

I don't want to hijack this thread with my complaints about the Ranger. Suffice it to say that I'm very glad I got the extended warranty - it has paid for itself at least five-fold.

I think the tow rating for the manual trans is lower because of the necessary clutch slipping with road gears. My f150 with a 5-speed is rated 2000-3000 lbs less than the automatic. Clutches will really burn up with a big load if you're not careful. Still, the ranger does have a crappy manual transmission. Just try to find one in a junkyard.
Dave
