Building a PTO Generator - Questions

I built a 8kw generator for my 27hp Kubota. I used a triple belt system. Wanted to run PTO at 540 but found that the large pulley would need to be about 36" diameter. I recalculated and run PTO on high speed (1000rpm). Pulley is about 19" diameter. Whats interesting is that I sold the Kubota yesterday and looking for a new tractor with a loader. However I am finding that many tractors no longer have the 1000rpm PTO.

Duane: Perhaps I should keep my 'fingers shut' unless I've got something more than a vague idea to offer, but here goes. I wonder if somebody manufacturers a conversion gear box to use 1000 PTO implements on 540 PTO’s. There would be some loss of power going through more gears, but it might be easier than redoing the generator drive.

A 540 to 1000 conversion might work as well since gearboxes often can be turned around. If a specific product can’t be found, a generic box from an OEM catalogue might do the trick.

Building a PTO Generator - Questions

Elkoboy: There are lots of really cheap gearboxes around. Check in a auto wrecking yard for an olde straight thru 4 speed trany. Use it backwards to gear up to the PTO/gen speed you need. Every thing is already yoked or splined. If rotation is wrong for your gen turn it around and put beside it... HAVE FUN!
