Was looking for info on a small pto generator 6000 watts etc for my 7232 cub, also was looking into adapting generator from gasoline unit where motor is broken to be used on 540 pto useing belts and pullys or gears to turn the generator at required rpm. thanks for any info

Just saw your info for pto generator useing pulley and belt to make up the 3600 rpm, I think im going to do the same thing, dont want a gas motor to mess around with when my diesel cub cadet starts and runs fine, im not worried about the extra hours on it for resale or fuel, I just need it maby twice a year for ice storm or hurricane like DENNIS sitting off the coast here heading back my way again.

A couple of things to consider here. First is that most engine driven generators need to run at 3600 rpm to give 60Hz. That's pretty fast from a 540 rpm input. Second is how are you going to mount the contraption of generator, pulleys, and belts? I wish you luck in making it work! Sounds like a fun little project.

northern has a small one for sale, i think 8kw for pto hookup.the two things you need to know about pto generators are frequency and voltage control. mine has a freq. and volt meter built into the genset.the freq. meter you can see from the tractor seat so you can adjust the throttlebefor you get off the tractor. you cant rely on the pitch of the motor sound to help you regulate the voltage and frequency, so if the genset you buy does not have a freq. meter then you need to get one. harbor freight sells some multimeters for $9-$50 with the freq. reading capability built in that you could use to check the frequency under load.my experience has been that if you set the frequency for about 60.6HZ before applying load then you dont seem to fluctuate much below 60HZ when i apply full load. i have a 25KW generac connected to a NH 1520.since i only have about 19 pto hp i dont get the full 25kw from the set. you get about 1kw per 2hp.good luckal

A few years ago ABC warehouse (an appliance discount store in my area) sold me a 5000 watt 10 hp self contained unit. I have pressed it into service on several occasions. It runs the entire house without problems (minus the airconditioning). Unless you need to generate a lot of KW a tractor mounted unit does not seem like a good choice to me. Either way you have an extra unit taking up space and with the self contained unit you do not have to put hours on your tractor. I only paid $320 for the unit I have but I suspect the prices have increased considerably with the Y2K thing and all. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Norm,I have seriously been considering a PTO driven generator to replace my Little Honda Gen. Until about 2 days ago. We went camping (sort of) and used power off the generator someone brought with them, in our group. This made me realize that a PTO unit couldn't just be thrown on the back of the truck and used anywhere. Yes its another motor to service, but anyone who has ever owned a Honda knows that Maintainance consists of Gas & oil. I would seriously reconsider, unless you know that you would never take it anywhere. Oh, and the added HRS on the tractor meter is a good point, but sorta minor in my mind:0)

Norm,This would almost be impossible. You would need a minimum of a 5 inch pully on the generator not to have the belts stressed so badly that they would wear out quickly. You would then need a 33.5" pully to mount to the drive shaft to connect the 540 pto. The only other way would be to have a series of shafts to step it up over several sets of pullies. Then there is the issue that most motor driven gen sets don't have a bearing , or a large enough bearing to support the tension you need with V belts. I just set one up, but my PTO is capable of running at 2000 RPM. No, it is not a compact, but just as powerful. Used timing belts instead of V belts. Less strain on bearings and less HP loss. Northern has a 10,000 watt unit which was good for me. You really need a 1800 RPM unit.Good LuckBill
