 divot filler

This is a question for Murf or any of you golf course experts out there.I've noticed while playing golf lately,(i find the time once in a while)that on short holes where you get a lot of divots, they place pails filled with a mixture to fill in your divot. It appears to be mostley sand and i assume has seed mixed in.Since i occationaly take a divot with my mower,i thought it might be handy to have a container of this on the truck. Is this a prepared mix you can buy or do you just mix up your own.

Reg, the sand mix is used on a golf course for several reasons none of those pertain to home lawns so we will skip the long and boring explaination for now. If you are just scalping a high spot you are only removing the turf and leaving the soil behind. Just scratch the spot up with a scratch rake and throw some seed on it. If you are digging into a low spot just fill with soil as close to what the lawn is already growining in or get some bagged soil from the home center and seed it. There is no need to get tricky or expensive.

I agree 100%.

We do lots of things on 'working turf' that are completely unecessary on your lawn.

The two things which, however, the average homeowner fails to do regularly, which will help immeasurably, are aerating and de-thatching, especially if you over-seed in conjunction with the de-thatching.

The single best way to have a thick, weed-free lawn is to have a healthy well-fed lawn.

Best of luck.
