  Good way to spread chips on a trail

I'm thinning our trees and will be building about a mile long trail through the woods. As the trees are cut and pruned the slash is being chipped on the spot, with the chips being piled up here and there along the way. The plan is to use these chips to mark and cover the trail. The thought of spreading a miles worth of wood chips with a shovel and rake isn't very appealing. Anyone have some ideas on a less labor intensive way to spread these chips?

  Good way to spread chips on a trail

Ken, we use something called a 'spreader box' to accomplish that task. It is basically like a big light duty box-blade but goes on a FEL in place of the regular bucket, the difference being there is no real cutting edge, the back plate is just a flat peice fo steel, it can be adjusted to sit between 1" and about 3" above the ground level. The whole thing runs on big side plates like runners or skid shoes on a snowblower.

We dump a big pile of chips every so often and just drive along pushing the pile ahead of the machine. As you move it leaves a neat path of chips the width of the box and the depth of the opening under the rear plate.

You could probably make a serviceable version out of plywood and just push it ahead of your bucket.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll see what the rental stores around here offer. It would probably be easy to make a spreader box out of plywood. I could borrow the wheels from our old JD push mower to use as gauge wheels.
