Boom sprayer for Roundup and broadleaf
What would you recomend for a cheap (<$350) boom sprayer set-up for dispensing Roundup (on my gravel driveway) and a broadleaf killer for my lawn (approx 2 ac). I am thinking about buying a separate tank and electric pump and then getting a boom outfit. I could mount the entire thing on a set of 2x4's that could be placed on my carry-all. All the premade units have their own trailer which I dont need and I have more positional control if the unit is mounted directly on the tractor. Do the sprayer nozzles that come with ATV and trailer boom sprayers have sufficient accuracy for Roundup applications where I dont want to kill grass on the edge of the driveway (one unit I saw used 2 nozzles to spray a 7' wide swath in two paper fan type patterns). I suspect there might be quite a bit of fluctuation as to where the nozzle actually sprays. I am currently using a backpack sprayer and it takes ages. As always thanks for your considered opinions.

Try fimcoindustries.com they manufacture a line of garden and lawn sprayers. TSC stores sell this line. mytscstore.com sells a FIMCO unit 21-35005 which is 25 gallon that mounts to an ATV front rack with 7 nozzles on a 10' boom. The 2004 TSC catalog price was $359.99
If you are concerned with drift, you could shorten the width of the boom (i.e. 10' may be too wide for your driveway), redrill the nozzle mounting holes putting them closer together and run the boom closer to the ground. You could then check out the pattern to get proper overlap which could be regulated by height of boom.

You first might look to a company like Demco which specializes in spray equipment an do build slid in unit that would do your job. There catalogs also give you nozzle height and spread patterns if you need to modify. There prices are not quite in your ball park but their information can answer all your questions.

I have done miles of fence row spraying with a pto 3 point sprayer, as well as a backpack. I currently have a packpack, 3 point pto, and a new 26 gallon electric. The model I bought was from Northern Tool + Equipment, part number 268121. It cost $199 and seems fine, had it 2 years now Sureflo pump is quality, even came with straps. I did buy the agitation kit for mixing and the use of suspentions. The same unit is available in 16 gallon model. It comes with a wand that has a single-broadcast head and an adjustable regular tip. The "boom" nozzle works well (up to 14 feet wide) but I don't think it has nearly the amount of accuracy for the edge of a driveway. You could use it just for the broadleafs. The edges would be best shot with the wand. I just ride along fences and hold the wand in one hand. You will waste less round up too. I hooked up a normally off, momentarily on switch in the wire for boom use. For the wand, it shuts off with the gun trigger, and the pump has automatic shutoff at 60 psi. I mount it on a pallet and put it on my forks, but a carryall would be great. The only downside I can see is the inability to utilize all the spray in the tank. I just take the last gallon or 2 and put it in my backpack for later use.
