Wood chips under loam

For the lawn/landscaping, I have been told it's a good idea to spread a layer of wood chips under the loam. Anybody heard of this? Pros/cons?

Wood chips under loam

Wood chips can rob your soil of nitrogen while they rot. I know first hand that it's not good for a garden. I'm guessing it's not good for a lawn either. But there are landscaping experts here who will know more than I.

Wood chips under loam

All wood contains pest-repelling toxins in varying degrees, a self-protection mechanism that persists right down to the sawdust. Pick the wrong kind of wood chips to put under your loam, and you risk killing beneficial insects and worms that would otherwise fertilize and aerate your soil.

Wood chips under loam

Not a good idea unless you are trying to break up heavy clay. Woodchips make soil more acidic, so you'll have to add lots of lime to correct the pH. Heavy lime will react with nitrogen fertilizers and release ammonia gas causing your fertilizer to burn out before the grass can use it.
