 SUBMERSIBLE WELL PUMP TYPES

Does anyone have experience with the new variable speed or constant pressure well pumps? Are they really better than the standard on/off relay type? I've been reading reliability problems are a concern (cost more too). Any advice is most welcome as I'm set to replace my pump.

I think I would stick with a simple submersible pump system and go with the most tank and or tanks you can afford. Having a large pressure tank capacity will give you a large volume of water on hand in the event of a power outage as well as sharply reduce the on/off cycling of the well pump.

Here is a discussion on this topic and as you mentioned, reliability and power consumption are issues.

I don't know anything about variable pressure pumps, but I do know that the standard on/off submersibles are so reliable you almost forget you have one. I've had them in two different wells, I don't remember the horsepower anymore, but the first one is down about 80ft. and has not been pulled since new in 1971. The well on the other property is 500 ft. deep with the pump hanging at about 400 +ft. It's been there 15+ years and never been pulled. Like was said put in a good sized tank with a standard submersible and unless lightning or something happens you will be trouble free for years.
