Sorry I don't know what a grinder pump is. I started out thinking hydraulics and wrote some bumphf but now I think it may not be relevant.

Tom,
This is a waste pump for use where the septic field or sewer is higher than the 'collection point'

Several years ago we were giong to build a house, but the spot we liked would have required a lift pump for the sewer. I called the local septic service guy, his answer at that time was avoid the lift station if possible, that they can be a problem, so we moved the house further up the hill and avoided it. But perhaps by now the pumps have been improved. Best of luck, Frank.

Thanks Bliz. Some friends had one of those and it sure isn't good for them to fail. Theirs didn't but our codes require the pumps to be run off a GFI circuit (same as all outside outlets). Really dump because the GFI kept tripping. Apparently it's common for contractors to install the GFI's for inspection only. I think my friends lived there for almost 10 years and I never heard they replaced the pump, but I have no idea what make it was. I'd think something was wrong with a failure at 3.5 years. There an expression for extreme worry or anxiety that may apply but I don't suppose that joking around is very helpful here.

Goulds makes rugged pumps!
I found the link (below) and one thing that's important is the pump must be fully submerged for best life. It is rated for continuous or intermittent operation, but limited to 10 evenly spaced starts per hour. Bearing life is 30,000 hours, so check your wiring and controls. Is the basin it is in is too small?
Perhaps the float or pressure switch is sticking or improperly set, causing over-heating.

I had a house in Sturbridge MA on the lake. The town decided to get rid of septic systems. They decided to go to a grinder system for the whole area and save on pipe and excavation costs. I sold the house before the system was installed but had a number of discussion with the engineers. Before they decided to install the system I had paid for the design of a pump septic system.
All the engineers were talking 20 years for these pumps.
I can not say the 2K in septic education was well spent, but in political areas sometimes you don't have a choice.
