OLD AIR COMPRESSOR OUT OF BREATH

OLD AIR COMPRESSOR OUT OF BREATH

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think my 39 Yr. old Monkey Wards air compressor is about on its last leg.
It don't run fast enough to pump up to the 100 Lbs. it's set for.
I'm lucky to get 20 or 30 Lbs out of it.
Anyone know how to tell if it's the motor or the compressor that's dragging it down?

If it seems to be running the same speed but not pumping much, it has lost its sealing pressure. If it runs slower than normal, then probably the compressor turns harder than normal. Does it get hotter than usual?

If it is a piston style pump the seals may have gone bad. It is belt driven? Can the belt be slipping? Could a pressure regulator have vibrated, not allowing it to go to a higher pressure?

Some time you just have to throw in the towel. Sams has APs for around $300. I bought the 220v unit and it keeps up with the air tools just fine. If you just like to tinker great, I would not put to much into the old unit. I found it is hard to live without an AP.

lbrown,

Check for leaks. Be sure the intake for air is clear and no insects have made it a home. No doubt you have checked the oil level for the compressor.

If it is running slow rpms and you don't have any belt slippage, I believe you will find it the compressor as electric motors don't normally just loss rpms. But then you did not say if it was an gas or electric driven or I missed it. My guess is it probably is not turning slow, rather the rings in the compressor is worn reducing the compression.
