 Improving the lawn

My farm in northeast gergia has a couple acres of "lawn" near the barn and along the driveway. The condition of the "lawn" is pretty rough- a mixture of grass types-looks like common bermuda and fescue, lots of weeds and, in places, a somewhat rough surface area (dips and depressions up to 6"inches deep). The lawn area is surrounded with 40 acres of pasture with a very good hay crop- but lots of weeds too. I'd like to take steps now to improve it, though I don't expect it to be golf course-like. But it would be nice to see it become more uniform in texture and in smoothness-it's sort of beating up my mower and my back. I would be nice if this was something I could do a little of each year and gradually manicure it in the process.

 Improving the lawn

I've seen rough lawns leveled with the use of a power rake. They will remove the highs and fill the lows. The lows will show up later as the soil settles into the lows but will leave it far smoother than it was without tearing up the whole lawn. The weeds in your area I don't know anything about but here in central NY same as anywhere you need good soil for good grass. There are many places you could get your soil checked and see if it has the basic's needed to promote good growth. That brings us to the time to go after the weeds, many of the weed killers inorder to work the best need the same as your lawn to work well so build your base and the rest will happen with nature. Most grasses need certain heights to be strong, mow at the recommended heights and your turf will be able to fight many weeds on it's own in the future.

Thanks for the input. I'm not familiar with a power rake.. Have a Kubota L3010-is that something I could use to operate the power rake? Is it something I could rent or are we talking about buying one? Any sense of the cost?

Bob, there are quite a few power rakes you can try but probably the best known would be the Harley by Glenmac. Here in Ohio to buy one you are talking any where from $5700-$6700, and to rent is $50-$150 a day just depends what is available and from who. My local Ford dealer gets $50 while the local Kabota dealer gets a $150 a day. Your Kabota will handle a 6' Harley with ease and they do an excellent job at tearing up the hardest dirt and leveling all at the same time. I own a 6' Harley and use a Deere 4600 on it. Hope this helps, budinohio.

If you are intersested in purchasing an implement like this, you may want to look into a Rockaway rock picker. This works like a rock hound or maybe even the kind the other fellow mentioned. All you need is a remote valve T-ed off you bucket control (Cost me about $400.00 for the dealer to do it). Drill a 1 1/4" hole on each bucket side and slide in the pins and hook up the couples and your ready to go. A four inch bar with carbide teeth throw the rocks into you bucket and throws the topsoil out through the screen. It works great. If you would like more info, I have access to Rockaway litature. The cost is going to be around $4000.00 for one of these units.

Bob, I too live in Northeast GA and struggle with the health of my lawn and pasture. You probably should have your soil tested at the local county extension office but you can't go wrong with LIME. It helps more than anything else and will boost the efficiency of any fertilizer you use. Some feed stores will drive a spreader out to your home or you can spread the pelletized stuff out yourself. After you break up the soil would be a great time. Good luck.
