Survey Car Wash or Hand Wash your car

How often do you wash your car and do you use a car wash or wash it by hand?

My wife thinks I am nuts, not alone in that unfortunately, I will only buy silver cars and trucks because they don't show the dirt and I can go long periods between washes.

I wash them by hand no pressure washer, rinse off 2 or so times in winter just hose, by hand after winter, maybe once in summer and fall. Probably less than 4 times a year.

When I was a youth and I had my first new car I washed and waxed it every two weeks... ahh to be young and foolish ROFLaughing out loud

I used to hand wash till the car washes came along. the first ones weren't as good as some now are, you still had to hand wash the bugs off the front.
We have a favorite one now that the owner just overhauled the fluid system, it takes every bug off the front, I couldn't hardly believe it. I don't know if he uses a different soap now or just turned up the pressure. The Mrs. usually does it when she does a grocery run. She said it costs a buck more now, eight dollars I think she said for the wax and all. I used to take the power washer to the under sides of the fenders but have been getting lazy about that lately.

Frank.

We have to drive 10 miles on a gravel/mud logging road each day so there is little point in washing often. Every couple of weeks I stop by the car wash to rinse off the mud. Every two or so years I get it detailed, buffed and waxed. I do make sure the body drains are open maybe twice a year.

Used to go through the touchless car washes. But this new Porsche has curves and protrusions that frustrate the touchless process. So - arthritis and all - I'm forced to hand wash. But I ease the process somewhat by using power washer for the wheels/tires and flat black lower trim. At least once a year it will go to a professional detailer for a proper cleanup.

Greg- If i lived closer I WOULD BE GLAD to stop in peroidically to hand wash, dust, detail a Porsche -provided I got a chance to be a passenger in one --or at least let me drive it to the end of the driveway.Smile
Back to topic during the freezy winter months I take the vechicles down to the car wash and hi pressure rinse them down about once a month-depending on salt build up and winter slush crapWink yeah right and then during the spring thru early fall i will hand wash and detail -tar, bug specks, etc and wax them twice. I have a seroius trust issue with the automatic drive-in car wash tunnels-even 'touch -less'. back in my college days -decide to splurge for a special date and ran car thru one and both my outside mirrors were ripped off ('66 Rambler) Wash place told me "tough luck'-ask them to at least pay for part -nope nada.. So I don't trust 'big machnery brushes' against a cars 'appendages'.Smile

Greg one must be careful aboout who is doing things for you when you have a expensive sports car.

One day, Jimmy knocks on the door of a home in an upper-class neighbourhood. The lady of the house answers.' Pardon me Ma'am', Jimmy says, 'I'm out of work and looking for any odd jobs that people need done. I'm very handy with everything from repairs to yard work, to painting...'

'Painting?' the woman jumped in.

'Oh, yes, Ma' am! I'm a very careful painter, 'Jimmy replied, his face brightening at the realisation that she could provide him some work.

'I'll tell you what. My husband just bought some green paint last week to paint the porch out back, but we haven't had any time. If you can do a good job, then you can paint it before he gets home and surprise him.

'Now, do a particularly good job and paint the trimmings white as well, and I'll pay you an extra bonus.'

'Oh yes, Ma' am, I'll do an excellent job!' She then told Jimmy where to find the paints around back in the garage.

A few hours later, Jimmy returns to the door.' That was quick, did you do a good job?' the woman inquires.

' Oh yes Ma' am, two coats! But there's something you should know, 'Jimmy says.

'That car is not a Porsche, it's a Ferrari!'

Dennis- nice play of words Smile Smile.... I understand the sentiments quite well of expensive, irreplaceable articles whether tools, cars, etc. and who touches, uses them. I hope Greg takes the 'light jealousy jest' with a smile as intended. We(I) could have had a Porche but we invested in the future, our daughters education, she just graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy, she has a job and my wife and I are super proud that she stuck to it, as that was her goal from start of high school.

I work in a sand and gravel operation. We use water truck for dust control. My pick up stays a mess. Use the drive thru's during the winter when I can't stand it any more. During the summer have the Hotsey out often and wash truck. Do a hand job on truck a couple of times a year.

Now the Harley's are another story. Minimum of weekly usually every ride either complete hand job or quickie with pressure washer to remove bug guts. They are detailed at least every 2 weeks with quickie polish each wash getting the hi points.

During the week if just a couple of short trips I may not wash, just do windshield.

I am pretty sure I took my '02 Tundra to the car wash once about 6-7 years ago. Other than that it gets washed when it rains or snows.

My problem is my well water. If I wash a car in my very hard water it is covered with white spots that are very difficult to remove when it dries.

If I wash in soft water straight out of the softener it still has white freckles, albeit ones that are easier to remove.....but then I have to go to a car wash to get the spots off....

My long term plan is to install a small R.O. system in the garage and keep 50-100 gallons of pure water in storage to use as a final rinse.

Looks like our survey is indicating very little OCD on car cleanliness Smile A friend of mine that was into fitness once said that a "clean car was a sign of a sick mind!"
