Anyone have any experience or opinions on Baumalight generators? As some of you who may remember my posts in the last couple months know I've remodled an existing building to move my wood and machine shop equipment into. I have several pieces of heavier duty three phase machines that I was originally going to sell and replace with smaller single phase replacments because three phase service is not available where the new shop is. Several people suggested a phase converter, the electrician called a couple different phase converter company tech people, basicly it just got to complicated and expensive to be a realistic solution. This past week our part of the country experienced heavy ice storm damage with long power outages. We've never had a standby generator for the house so the solution decided on is to buy a Baumalight Model QC 45-2 PTO powered generator capable of both single and three phase. I'll probably have less than a half hour of three phase per day needed in the new shop, the generatoer and tractor will sit in a seperate unheated part of the shop, exhaust will be pumped out thru a setup similar to what you see in tractor dealerships, only on a much smaller scale. During power outages to the house, the tractor and generator will never move, this tractor will be dedicated to genereator use only, I've got plenty of tractors. During power outages the house will be pluged into the generator thru a throw sitch to prevent any back feed to utility lines, I'm happy, the electrician is happy, wife is happy. I think this will work out fine, the only question I have is on the Baumalight brand, does anyone have any experience or opinions on them, tell it like it is. Thanks. Frank.

I'd consider a stand-alone standby 15K or bigger unit. They come propane, diesel or gas. At one time Home Depot was selling them. They self-start too, and are relatively quiet. They're great if you're away from home and the power goes out--at least the pipes won't freeze and the freezer won't melt.

EW; Thank you for your response. Yes a stand alone was discussed and a bit of research and pricing was done by my electrician, again things got out of hand cost wise to get something in the 45KW neighborhood. A friend called me yesterday noon, said he saw in the paper a 45KW W/Allis Chalmers 6 cyl. diesel W/275 gal fuel tank, no other details, $4500.00, I called but it already had sold.

Our company has lots and lots of diesel powered gen sets, or hydraulic sets, to run our mobile equipment.
Typically the 3P generator is a 3P not either or. To get 1P all have transformers on them.
I have 1 gen set in the yard, it came off a large screen plant) I can not even begin to pronoun the name it runs every day (during the summer) with no problems. It has a transformer and I have no idea if we could use 1P & 3P at the same time.
I get a industry rag called Marine Diesel? It still comes as part of the dredging operation we had. You might try googling there. They have scads of marine gen sets.
I guess where I am going with this is: if you like the price I would not be afraid of it. The only thing needed is brushes or bearings and most of the sets now are brushless.

Harvey; Thanks for your input. the need for single and three phase power will not be needed at the same time. There are only three or four three phase machines I need to power. The single phase in the shop will be supplied by conventional wiring comming off the utility lines, so the generator need not produce both phases at the same time. None of the three phae machines will be hard wired into anything, just powered by a super heavy drop cord system. Thanks. Frank.
