poo gathering device
Any ideas for what I can use to gather up horse apples? I hurt my back, so shoveling them a pile at a time is too much for me.
Would something like the agri-fab vacuum work if the piles were somewhat dry? Or would that just make poo puree? (yum!)
Or is there some nice attachment I can put on my tractor that will sweep them up?
Thanks in advance.

Based on my experience, and I'm far from an expert, although my wife might argue that point.
If you wait until they're fairly dry, a de-thatching rake dragged around slowly will gather them. After they're in a pile just get the FEL bucket close and just fire them in with a pitch fork.
Best of luck.

murf- does it matter what kind/size dethatching rake to use? Thaks for the idea.
I'd still need something to lift the pile into the FEL.
In a perfect world someone would invent a machine I could tow that would pick up the nuggets and fill a cart. I can't believe nobody has invented such a thing.
brokenarrow- I don't have spouse as an option. No neighborhood kids in need of money either.
Thanks for your replies.

Funchy, that 'perfect world' does exist, it's called an Olathe Turf Vacuum, the problem is they start as several thousand dollars and go waaaay up from there.
The rake only has to have small enough spacing to gather the firm ones up, past that it's all personal preference.
Best of luck.

Do golf ball picker-upers work in a way which could be modified for larger chuncks, [poo-balls] dry of course....????

I have had some success with a lawn sweeper for keeping after the beagles. It does the job, but also makes a bit of a mess of the equipment. I hose it down and get ready for the next clean-up. Not sure how well that would work for horses. The sweeper has a dump system, so at least I can sweep it up and dump without getting to personnaly involved.

bmlekki, good idea, but alas, no. Golf ball picker-uppers work on trapping the ball between two carefully spaced revolving disc.'s, the spacing can be exact because golf balls are all made to an exact standard.
Beagle, I suspect the Horse Apples Funchy is trying to gather are a good bit larger than those your Beagle buddies leave on the lawn.
If not you definitely need to cut back on the amount of fibre you're feeding them, .
We had a bad experience once using a sweeper to collect the offerings left when a Kennel Club rented a golf courses banquet facilities for a Dog Show. It rained on the last day, we went in the following day to do the cleanup.
Let's just say the rain-soaked, fresh material was not ..... condusive ..... to being picked up with a revolving broom. ;->
Best of luck.

Yep, some of can be a sloppy mess, but it does pick it up. Better on the sweeper than some of the options available to us. I could see how horse prizes would be a lot tougher on the sweeper, but it picks up some good sized stuff off the lawn. Just a thought.

Honestly I'd pay that if I was sure it would do what I needed it to do. Do you have a website for them? I searched and didn't find much.
Leaving poo out in the pasture isn't pretty, it feeds the flies, and it keeps horse worm level high. My back is no longer up to hand-shoveling it. There's got to be a better way.
