 Garden Chemical Availability

My province (Ontario) recently banned the sale of just about every garden chemical, even those permitted by the federal government. Had friends wintering in Florida look for supplies but they said it seemed similar there.

Can anybody confirm what kind of restrictions on chemicals such as Cygon, and general and broad-leaf herbicides, exist in east-coast states? Thanks.

I'm sorry to say even having the information won't help.

The products are now illegal in Ontario, both to possess and to use, except under very strict new guidelines.

If you try to ship or bring them in it will, shall we say, "attract unwanted attention to yourself" if you get my drift.

To excerpt the press release we got from from the Goobermint via our association, "Pesticides cannot be used for cosmetic purposes on lawns, vegetable and ornamental gardens, patios, driveways, cemeteries, and in parks and school yards. There are no exceptions for pest infestations (insects, fungi or weeds) in these areas, as lower risk pesticides, biopesticides and alternatives to pesticides exist. More than 250 pesticide products are banned for sale and over 95 pesticide ingredients are banned for cosmetic uses."

There are ways around it, but I've heard of neighbourhood tree-huggers reporting suspected violations to the powers that be, who investigated and offered stern warnings to the suspected violators.

Sorry, but at least everyone is in the same boat.

Best of luck.

Thanks, but I would still like to know what our neighboring jurisdictions are doing.

Sounds like the plans the Democrats have for our health care...regulate it to improve it to kill it.

Hey, how about a health care plan for weeds and insects run by the US Federal Government...might take 3 to 5 years but they would kill them off. So Sad

My mistake, I misunderstood what you were asking.

I recall reading, I'll see if I can find it, an article in a trade publication about a sort of sneaky way the governments in many jurisdictions were moving to reduce the 'homeowner' use of a lot of chemicals.

They create a multi-tier 'registration' system under which permission to distribute (sell) the products must be received before the product can be sold for products packaged in quantities or formulations (i.e. ready-to-use) suited for 'homeowner' or 'retail' use. They also make this 'registration' an annual requirement.

The net effect is they are not "banning" the sale of a particular product, instead it's just too costly and too cumbersome to be economically viable to sell the product any longer so the company stops producing it.

A "ban" could result in a court challenge as happened with the Province of Quebec being sued under NAFTA rules by Dow AgroSciences when the Province unilaterally banned many pesticides in 2004, including 2,4-D (a broadleaf weed killer). They claimed the ban, without scientific evidence amounted to an expropriation of profits.

Maybe this is what you are seeing now.

Best of luck.

Auerbach, when you ask on east coast states do you mean in the US as I understand in Canada you call them Providences?
As of a month ago there has been no change in South Carolina. Know the shelves of Lowes are full of premix for the homeowner.

Yes, thanks, in the US.

We call them providences on Sundays when we pray for them, otherwise provinces.

I don't think so. But if it were possible, I'd order them from another province so the package wouldn't have to be inspected.
