 Hydraulic problems

I have a 10' Load Trail dump trailer which I purchased new about 18 months ago. I have used it about 30 times and have no problems until today. Today I went to dump a load of top soil (1&1/2cy). Just barely had the power to get the trailer high enough to dump. Even slower on the way down and when it got about 2/3 of the way down it started forcoing oil of the reservoir. I babied it to get it down the rest of the way. Thought maybe the battery was going dead but why would it start forcing oil out of the reservoir.

Any thoughts on what the problem might be.

 Hydraulic problems

If the pump motor sped and slowed down while up and down ---sort of like when you block a vacuum cleaner and the motor speeds up---you must have gotten air in the suction side of the pump---how? Don't know. Apparently air has displaced the oil and that extra volume had to go somewhere--out the vent.

My dump trailer uses one pump to drive one cylinder and has only power up or one-way (single) actuation.

Is your reservoir on the end of the pump or is it separate? Look fr a loose fitting or fitment which may where the air may be entering (if I'm correct).

Side bar: I removed the trailer hitch jack and replaced it with a single acting hydraulic cylinder with spring return and a valve. Now I can attach and unattach the trailer in seconds.

Anywho, an alternate diagnosis may be your pump may be shot (dirt got in the system) and is cavitating which may also create air in the system.

A new pump will run in the mid-to high $200.

Reservoir is located on end of pump. Low battery appears to be part of the problem. Not sure why oil foamed out of the reservoir on the down cycle. Local trailer dealer/repair shop is checking it out.

 Hydraulic problems

Is it possible that water or some other contaminate has gotten into the system?

Turned out to be a low battery caused by burned out fuse not keeping the battery charged. Not sure why the oil foamed out when it came down. Anyway the local trailer shop charged up the battery, checked the fluid and found the burned out fuse and replaced it. Everything works fine now. Oh yea, the best news was they only charged me $10. Not bad considering I didn't buy the trailer from them.
