 Selling a trailer on E-bay

Having heard lots of horror stories from people selling things on E-bay and ending up with a bum check, etc. has anyone here had a good experience selling on E-bay. Other than E-mails and doing a Google search I am basicly computer illeterate, I'm much more at home getting greasy off an old Farmall or making sawdust. Can you sell a licensed vechile on E-bay? This is a tow behind travel trailer with plates, title, etc. Thanks. Frank.

 Selling a trailer on E-bay

As a bit of a followup question, nothing is for free, so there has to be a commission charge of some kind involved doing the E-bay thing. Anyone know what the charges are, or how you can know you are getting a legitimate check, etc. Frank.

 Selling a trailer on E-bay

Frank you can sell pretty much anything on eBay. There were even a few people auctioning the right to name their newborn babies.

And checks, even bank and certifieds can be fraudulent. I'd accpet cash only with picture driver license----and invest in one of those making pens that test for bad bills and a UV light the banks use ---or just go to a bank WITH the buyer---so don't let them show up a time the banks are closed.

Case in point, I sold a $2500 snow plow last Fall to a guy 700 miles away. This was on CraigsList, not eBay. I told him CASH ONLY. So what does he do--he sends his girlfriend to pick it up---brings only $1500 cash and a company check for $1000. I was livid! He wouldn't return my calls while she was waiting to pick it up so I could bitch him out for pulling that. Lucky for him, the check cleared a few days later---point is he could have had a $2500 plow for only $1500!

Go to eBay, do a search for a travel trailer like yours. See if it's even worth selling it on ebAY as hey don't always draw the high price you may be looking for for whatever reason---delivery being the biggest thing, and being able to look at it up-close being the next.

I don't sell on eBay but I have bought many things--small things. Had only two bad deals and that was due to a large corporation not reacting or carying through like they said they would. eBay is useless when it comes to helping you with problems because it becomes "he said-she said". And I found the more a seller sells the more eBay protects them. Why, you ask? Simple. eBay gets a seller fee amongst other fees.

I used a local "selling store" to sell some car parts and tools. They took 30% right off the top of the selling price. Apparently it's not that profitable a business as she it out of business now, but there are others in the area doing the same thing.

Anywho, going back to your traile search on eBay, there is a link that says "sell one like this" or something like that. That will walk you though the steps to sell yours. Good luck.

And, see, we don't always butt heads. And don't call me a butthead Laughing out loud Smile Surely.

And don't call me Shirley, either. Wink yeah right

 Selling a trailer on E-bay

Thanks EW, we only butt heads over is hydro tractors, plus the wife's virtual new Lexus would have been PINK so you wouldn't have liked it anyhow. And honest there was a local fellow, can't remember his last name, (now deceast) who's first name was Shirley. This E-bay thing all sounds a bit scary to me, so maybe I'll just park it by the road and see what happens. The oldest daughter uses the E-ay thing buying and selling old jewelery, knick-knacky type stuff where geting stuck for a few bucks don't matter much, but this unit is according to the books a 17-19K unit, so I'd hate to be chasing down a bad check or phoney bills a week after the trailer want south. Frank.

 Selling a trailer on E-bay

Hardwood,

I've sold many things on E-bay, with no negative feedback to report.

(I'm not allowed to sell my goods on E-bay any longer however, due to their new anti-gun policies.)

Hunters and fisherman are very honest and friendly people.

You shouldn't have any problem selling your trailer on E-bay. You shouldn't accept personal checks, but Postal Money Orders are very safe. Additionally, you shouldn't sell your trailer to anyone outside of your immediate area.

In your auction notes, you can specify

"NO SHIPPING"
"LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY"
"PAYMENT EXPECTED WITHIN X NUMBER OF DAYS AFTER AUCTION CLOSES"
"ITEM MUST BE PICKED UP WITHIN X NUMBER OF DAYS AFTER PAYMENT IS RECEIVED."
You should also require a minimum deposit, so as to deter anyone who might buy it, and then fail to show up to pick it up.

In your auction notes, you should clearly state, "IF NOT PICKED UP WITHIN THE TIME LIMIT, THE WINNING BIDDER'S DEPOSIT WILL BE FORFEITED, AND THE ITEM WILL BE RELISTED."

You'll get many people from your area who are willing to bid on the item, mainly because travel is too expensive for those who live far away.

Ebay isn't all bad. It's just that they are very much against gun accessories, bullets, reloading supplies, etc. Personally, I don't care for the communists who run the place, but it does serve a very useful purpose.

Enjoy the online auction experience.

Joel

 Selling a trailer on E-bay

When selling big ticket items on eBay I will take checks or cash (or paypal for smaller items). For checks I always ask my bank to call the issuing bank to verify funds (or to verify that the cashiers check is genuine) and always ask them at what point the money is guaranteed to be mine. That's when the item gets shipped or can be picked up. For local buyers picking the item up in person I always get their name, address, phone number, a copy of their drivers license and a picture of their vehicle and license plate and have them sign a bill of sale that states the item has changed hands. And I never sell to buyers outside the USA or Canada.

Thanks guys for the E-bay info, but it looks like we won't need them. Some people we know heard it was for sale, they looked at it late today and bought it. Frank.
