Need Help Bad
I purchased a used Tandem Trailer with brakes on both axles(Electric)Problem: I have a 1996 2 wheel drive Chev. pickup and I would like some advice on what kind of Brake Control and wiring harness I need to operate the trailer brakes. My truck doesn't have a towing package and I assume no provision for brake control wiring connection. It now has a 4 prong flat connector for trailer lights only, and I need advice!! Thanks in advance

I used the round 6-pin style. This is the "old" style. All the modern set-ups use a larger round seven pin style. This type of harness would be available from your chevy dealer, auto parts store or any camper shop.
You can also get an electric brake controller from a parts store or camper shop too. I made the mistake of buying a cheap Harbor Freight style controller for $60. A little more $ would get a nice control from a camper or trailer place too.

I'm sure you can get info on the wiring, perhaps from your dealer, but I've found one of the best brake controllers to be made by 'Prodigy'. (We tow horse trailers.) It is really nice in that it is not a timing-based controller - it is inertial. That is, it applies brake energy based on how hard it detects the vehicle stopping. Tap the brakes and you'll get very little braking energy. Stomp on them and it'll load 'em up. Very nice. Got mine at an RV shop online - shouldn't be hard to find. About $120.

Need Help Bad
Uhaul is another option for finding brake controllers. They'll even install them for you. I have the cheaper timing type on my 2WD Ford and they work fine. You have adjustments for maximum braking force and the time it takes to apply the max force. You do find yourself pumping the brakes a bit more because the trailer will tend to get to the set maximum even if you are just applying the pedal lightly. If you adjust the controls for the weight you're pulling they work well.

Need Help Bad
Most truck accessory stores will sell and mount the brake controller for about $125.00 to $150.00. I usually go with whatever brand of contoller the store sells since they usually migrate to the one that gives them the least after the sale problems since they have to handle warranty issues. They can do this while you wait after you set your appointment.
