2013 Subaru Crosstrek
I was looking to replace my Toyota Tacoma and really wanted a Subaru Baja, but they don't make them anymore. Next on the list was a Subaru Crosstrek. While looking at those I mentioned that I really wanted a Baja and the sales guy told me about his friend who was selling a 2003 low mileage one that was like new.
I went to see it and bought it on the spot. 40k miles and babied. It has a small 4x4 bed but it has a very clever tailgate and flip down door that extends that to nearly 8 feet for 2x4s and such. It's also built a lot more rugged than the toy-like Tacoma.
But I would have bought a Crosstrek had I not found the Baja.

Dennis, that Baja looks exactly like mine except I haven't been able to find a bed cover. They are hard to find. The Baja was based on the Legacy platform, was made from 2003-2006 and they only sold about 30k of them. They built some extras in 2006 that may have been sold as 2007 models. The car has a loyal following and they are holding their value quite well.

2013 Subaru Crosstrek
Hi Dennis,
I love my little Baja. The biggest problem I've had is that the foam in the seats was breaking down and the seats were killing my back so I replaced them with some Recaros. Highly recommended! I can drive for many hours with no back issues at all, the old seats hurt after 20 minutes.
Other than that no real problems. The tailgate stopped latching reliably and the latch pivot was rusted, after 10 years I'll forgive it. A little wire brush work and it's working fine again. The left window squeaks when lowered, maybe the rubber is getting old just needs cleaning and a does of silicone spray. I do wish it had a stick, just not a big fan of automatics. But, really, no issues. The mileage is a little lower than hoped, 22-23, the newer Subie's do better, but it's still 5mpg higher than my Tacoma was. As long as there is ground clearance it's a little billy goat in the snow with winter tires.
My plan is to keep it until it really dies, there's nothing else in the new car market that interests me. I think Nissan is bringing a mid-size diesel pickup but what passes for "mid-size" these days is about as big as a full size from the 60s and 70s so I'm not interested. I want a compact pickup.
BTW, my wifes 08 Subaru Impreza has been totally trouble free through 70k miles so no complaints there either.
