Bats in the Gables
I have a large population of bats that are living on the north gable of my house (colony of 30+).
It seems when my house was built they nailed a 1 x 6 pine board to the sheathing and then nailed another 1x10 pine board on top of it. They do this so they can just slide the cedar siding under it.
Only thing is it makes a great place for bats, after a while looking at tons of bat turds gets a little old.
It seems the critters have gone for warmer parts now, and I am wondering what is the best thing to stuff in this small space, that won't cause more problems and also be easy to do.
Since I have this Trim install method everywhere its a big and painful job with some sides of the building 3 stories up and higher with a 11 v 12 pitch gable.

I can not visualize exactly how this is put together Dennis but the normal method is to push screening into the area. If this is how I visualize this I would get some expanded metal screening, maybe paint it black to reduce visiblility and then cut in strips, fold in 1/2 and push into the cracks.
I say expanded metal, as it has more spring and the edges will grip the sides of the pine. The bats should not be able to push away the metal.
It is good to have the bats around to remove the insects so I might make some bat houses to provide them an alternative place to live and remove the mosquitos. With the Nile virus around this is a good thing.

Dennis: I've heard that hanging some sort of netting from eaves is good for deterring bats. I don't recall what kind of netting or how wide.
This is a non-member post because I'm in the middle of a Windows corruption and crash. I can't log in using my old NS browser. I'm tired of nursing my crippled system over the last couple of years and it's time for a new box, which I should have by Thursday.

I had a similiar problem with bats, and faced the same expensive remediation costs of about $1500 to stuff some material all around the edge of my house.
Well I was talking to a painter and warned him about the bats. He said that when they powerwash the house with house chemicals the bats are ususally casualties, and are gone while they paint.
Since I was not ready to hire the painter, but the wife was bugging the heck out of me on the bats I came up with a low cost alternative.
So, here is what I did. I took a garden hose and attached it to a 25 foot pole, I put a high pressure nozzle ($3 bucks) on the end. I emptied the hose, got a funnel, and then poured Clorox into a 50 foot length. Put on safety goggles, hosted up my contraption, aimed, turned on the water valve, fired, on the gable, 30-40 bats came flying out.
Have not seen them since !

My wife keeps telling me that I have bats in the belfry but everytime I get up in the attic, I don't see a thing? Go figure? <;o)

Let's see if it works this time - last time I posted a perl error occured and it looks like the message was lost.
We had about a dozen bats living in a 3/8" gap between our gutter and a warped fascia board. I like to watch the bats chase the bugs in the evenings and didn't want to chase them completely away, so I erected a bat house. One evening while they were out feeding I stuffed bronze wool, which won't rust, in the gap. This is temporary until I get out the sawzall and replace the fascia board but it has kept 'em out.

Well we had about 40-50 bats up there. I could seem them flyin all over the place at dusk doing there bug catching chores which I certainly appreciated.
Only thing was they would fly right up to us in their flight pattern since our deck is one story up. And it made it miserable to sit outside with them swooping all over near by.
Then if we tied up out Market umbrella they would move in and pounds of turds on my office window were none to pretty.
But now with the lack of welcome I showed them there are none to be seen in the night skys anymore, though the bugs so far have not been so bad given how wet it has been and no bats to kill them.
Yet the main driver was the wife's nagging to get me to spend a couple grand to shoo em when a bottle of clorox did the job.

With a deck like that you could have had an awesome trap and skeet range with real live targets! ;o)

Hard for me to visualize, but I have use that spray-in expansion foam to fill unseen voids. But don't put to much in or it will blow things apart. Just a thought.
