Could someone remind this old timer on how to check for square when laying out a floor plan whne constructing a 2X4 stud wall???

Measure catty corner in both directions.
If it's square both measurements will be the same.

I'm not sure exactly sure what your are looking for but when checking for square on a floor layout just measure diagonally from corner to corner. your square when your measurements are equal.
To make a wall stand square to a floor we would strike a line on the floor at a known distance away from our wall's inside edge(usually 1 1/2" then we would stand up the wall and hang a plumb bob from a 2X (again at 1 1/2"at he top and the wall will be square to the floor when the plumb touches the line.

sounds like your building one new wall? If so, you will need the 3,4,5, method. Starting in a corner, measure 3' one way down the wall, mark it. Back to the corner, measure 4'
down the other wall,mark it. The distance between the mark's should be 5'. not 5' 1/8 th. You can multiply this out depending on the length of the wall,example. 3,4,5, 6,8,10, etc.
This with the offset line and plumb bob previously mentioned
should get you right on the money. The diaganol method will work if you have a sq. to measure. I use all three when I'm
able.

If you want to know the exact dimension it should be, use the Pythagorean Theorem. (a² + b²= c²) where c is the hypotenuse and a and b are sides of a right triangle.

Thanks to all....just could not remember the 3,4,5 method. I am constructing a home bar in the basement and wanted to start with the interior wall layout. Now I just need to find some plans for the home bar design. Checked the internet but most all the plans offered cost $$$$. Will try some book stores or the library, Thanks again I will be sure to use all the methods descibed for my interior wall layouts.

The best way to find good workable dimensions for any construction is the method commonly employed by that Master Carpenter, Norm Abrahms.
That being the case you owe it to yourself to take measuring tape and notepad in hand, find several comfortable bars and take careful measurements.

PS, don't leave the notepad at home, for some reason you might forget some dimensions,  .
