Flatbed design
My old shortbox Chevy pickup body is getting to the point of no return; "Rust never sleeps". Anyone have any plans, photos or links to such that show how to build a flat-bed for pickups? I've seen a lot of poorly designed flatbeds and a few nice ones. I'd like to avoid the first catagory if possible and build a good one the first time out. Any help is appreciated!

Unless you really want a flat bed you might talk to a wrecker or body shop. A body shop guy came up with a '92 bed for my body shot '89 F150. We had to wait a few months before the bed was located. Most shops have the connections find this sort of thing. It came from the south, and I expect a bunch more years from it. For my 150, new doors, fenders and cab corners were available from after-market sources.

Flatbed design
It depends on the GVW of the chassis and what you will be using it for.
The simplest way to do it is a 'C' channel frame and checker plate floor, but that is usually much heavier than you need for the 'ole half ton pick-me-up truck. I have made some out of tubing and a wood floor that stood up very well and worked marvelously.
The real trick to it is planning and good design. Sides if required, stake pockets, tie-down rings and lights all require planning from the start to be anything much more than ugly blemishes on an otherwise nice rig.

Flatbed design
As an option to the checker plate floor that Murt talked about, I made a C channel frame with a treated 2x8 floor. for my one ton. The wood is pretty light compared with the steel floor and the whole thing is light enough for a half ton truck. A headache rack made from square tubing in front gives it a nice look.
