3 73 vs 4 10
After 10 years and 160k miles I'm still very happy wwith the 5-speed and 3.55 gears (wish for a 6 speed or maybe a splitter... ).
Done lots of hauling and the low 1st gear has more than made up the differance from the 4.10's. Go for the lower gears you'll be happy with the better empty milage. When loaded you can keep it in 5th (if needed) for long hill stretches.
Make sure to get the limited slip diff what ever you do for sure!!
PS: There are 19.5's available aftermarket for the Dodges, better ride longer life (100K miles!!) but big $$$.

3 73 vs 4 10
Howdy, folks. Thanks for all the answers. They are very helpful. Now if I can just get a not-too-outrageous price....

3 73 vs 4 10
Chief:
I had never heard of a problem with the Allison transmissions. Guess anything can be broken if you try hard enough.
I find in my work that something always breaks. On some jobs we just keep making components stronger then another component fails. We just keep moving through the components chain until everything is stronger and then it starts all over again.

3 73 vs 4 10
bsimmons,
With the weights you will be towing, don't even think about anything higher (numeriaclly) than 3.73 gears. I've got 3.54's in my '01.5 H.O. 6 speed Cummins Ram. I pull a triple axle trailer with a loaded weight of around 12K with no problems what so ever.

3 73 vs 4 10
As an Auto Technician that works on a lot of trucks, I recommend the 3.73 for you. The 4.10 is lower than needed is used more for heavy pulling
