The amount of damage and how wide spread it is just defies the imagination. My thoughts and prayers go out to these folks. At least the folks not involved in the looting and chaos.

I've been stuck home ill for the past two days. I have to go to the intereet just to get away. The total devastation is enourmous and incomprehendable. Over 1 million people displaced for a long period of time.
Humbling really.
But is a real shame the people that are shooting at rescuers. They are just making it far worse. This is the US not Iraq!! WTF??!!

My buddy at work has a son in Baton Rouge. His son had to go home early from work today to protect his family because there are people coming in from New Orleans with guns and taking over vacant/unfinished houses. Unbelieveable!

Subject: WHAT I'VE SEEN
What I have seen since Katrina:
The poor and the wealthy hurt by the storm.
Black, white, Hispanic, Oriental and Indian all hurt by the storm.
Christian people giving, giving, giving.
Churches going all out to minister in Jesus' name.
Neighbors going door to door helping one another.
Thugs and hoodlums going door to door looking for someone vulnerable.
Ice and water being fought over as police tried to keep the peace.
People coming up from New Orleans taking over empty houses because shelters are full.
Out of town volunteers coming with food and staying for now a week still serving it.
The Churches all over this part of the country doing what Christians do in a crisis.
The Red Cross doing a great job in the shelters.
The Salvation Army doing a great job in the community.
Four Hundred crewman from everywhere bring back the power to our homes, churches and businesses.
Lines at service stations a block to a mile long.
National Guardsman patrolling the streets of McComb along with Kentucky policemen protecting us from the hoodlums and thugs of McComb, Pike County and New Orleans (the most dangerous city in the world before Katrina.)
Drug dealers working outside shelters.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel working tirelessly, even sleeping in the hospital to do the job God called them to do.
WHAT I HAVE NOT SEEN; (Bet you have noticed this TOO.!!!)
The ACLU setting up a feeding line.
People for the American Way helping in the shelters.
The NAACP doing any work whatsoever.
The American Atheist organization serving meals in the shelters.
Jesse Jackson directing traffic at the gas stations or doing anything except insert racial division, AS USUSAL...
I could go on but you get my message. Its the Christian people with love and compassion who do the work.
The gripers in Congress should come on down and get in line to pass the water and the ice. Are you listening Hillary, Chuck, Teddy and all the sorry loafers we call Senators and Congressmen. They don't have a clue as to what this life is all about here on the Gulf Coast. They just want TV time to boost their own wellfare.
Boy I feel better now.............J

Nice rant! But you do have a good point. The whiners and complainers are doing nothing to help the victims but are working to help themselves. Sad... Sad the REd cross was kept out of New Orleans by the Govenor, yet it's George Bush's fault. I don't get it...

Unfortunately; I don't believe it matters what party you belong to. I am beginning to believe a friend who was a town major 25 years ago that stated you could not really follow God and be in politics.
Part of the problem is the mind set that drives a man to get a law degree. Generally it means the man has no technical ability what so ever. Most of us have a fixed opinion on lawyers level of honesty. Why do we think we are more honest when they run for the donkey or the elephant.
I guess I do not understand why President Bush placed a lawyer in charge of FEMMA and then expected anything other than deliberation in a time of crisis.

Back on topic NOAA has aerial pictures of the whole coast. A refugee from Long Beach who was staying next door asked me to find the her house and see what was left as she was not allowed home. I used the google earth and the NOAA pictures to find a before and after shot. It took a number of hours to pick through the photos. Pretty disheartening to look at all the mess.
We could tell the walls were up on her house but 2 doors up there was nothing but slabs. I got word today that she found the roof blown off and nothing really left. This is what I told her from my photo work.

Latest info: According to military sources, organized gangs from all over the South, as far away as Nashville, came to New Orleans post-flood, equipped with boats and SUV's and automatic weapons to systematically loot the city.
This explains a whole lot of stuff I didn't understand at first, such as why there was so much gun fire (rival gangs) and where all the stuff ended up when most everyone was taken out of town on buses with basically the clothes on their backs.
It also explains why a group of contractors attracted gunfire.... as they were mistaken for a rival gang trespassing on claimed turf. Fortunately the cops and military escorts sent 5 of this crowd to the eternal turf war.
This is not to say that the locals were not also looting, as clearly they were, but the majority of the stuff was done by opportunist criminal types from outside.
Soldiers deployed in New Orleans, recently returned from Iraq, described the first few night there as worse and more dangerous than Baghdad.

Got this off the news wire from a local TV station website. It discusses what the National Guard is finding when they do the house to house: large stashes of stolen goods.
NEW ORLEANS -- It was like a modern-day treasure map -- a computerized diagram of neighborhoods with codes marking the addresses where National Guard soldiers came upon caches of goods taken by looters in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
"There's probably still loot out there" hidden in various homes, Capt. Gregg McGowan said from his Oklahoma National Guard unit's makeshift headquarters.
"We're not going house-to-house looking for it, but if we find it, we secure it so police can check it."
In the chaos that followed Katrina's flooding, looters targeted everything from grocery stores to gun shops to trendy women's clothing boutiques. Now that the city is mostly empty of civilians, military patrols making house-to-house checks for remaining residents or the dead are finding some of the hiding places for the stolen goods.
New Orleans District Attorney Eddie Jordan said he intends to prosecute as many looters as he can. However, few arrests have been made thus far because authorities have been primarily concerned with reaching stranded residents, Jordan said.
The guardsmen recently thought they had caught a looter coming back into town to load his stash onto a moving truck. Inside his home, the soldiers found automobile parts stacked 8 feet high, a new off-road motorcycle and various electronics, including a video game system with a pawn shop ticket still attached.
But the man told the soldiers he had no idea where the goods came from and that someone else must have broken into his home and stashed them there after he evacuated. Skeptical, the soldiers detained him until police arrived, filled out a report and seized the goods. They took the man's name and address, but did not arrest him.
"You could be technical and say, 'I'm going to book him with possession of stolen property,' but then you have to find out who the owner is, find out whether that person had permission take that property," New Orleans Police Capt. Marlon Defillo said.
"So what we're generally doing is seizing the goods as found property and writing a report."
That way, he explained, authorities can return the goods if they figure out where they came from - rather than holding them as evidence pending the resolution of often drawn-out criminal cases.
In other homes, McGowan's unit found automatic teller machines that had been broken open and emptied of cash and bags of ammunition still packaged in 500-round bundles, not the individual boxes of 20 rounds usually sold over the counter.
A smashed-open video poker machine, likely taken from a bar, was left lying on the sidewalk of an Uptown residential street.
In a church-run assisted living home close to a heavily looted Wal-Mart in the lower Garden District, a team of guardsmen found new bicycles, stereos and clothing. Someone associated with the church, who refused to give his name, said at least seven rooms in the four-story residence were filled with goods believed to be stolen.
New Orleans police are storing seized loot in a makeshift warehouse near the city's train station, Defillo said. He declined to provide details on how many goods had been found, how many businesses or homes had been looted, or if authorities had any long-term plan to track down some of the culprits.
"We haven't even had time to deal with that yet," he said.
