Registering a URL
Have any of you registered a URL? What is the best way of going about it? Let's say I wanted to register the name shortmagnum.com or .net or .org. Are there some domain registration sites that are better than others?
I know this might be way off topic for tractor guys but I thought I'd first ask people I can trust.

Registering a URL
Dave, there are as many people who will register a domain name for you as there url's out there.
The simplest (I found) was to have the ISP you use, or plan to use to host your site do it for you. As with lots of things, saving a buck is not always good value when you add in the "PITA factor".
Speaking of people we trust, maybe Dennis or one of the other compu-techies here will host the site for you.
Best of luck.

I did this about 12 years ago, so this info may not be current. I found Network Solutions to be the *worst*, and dumped them as soon as possible. Billing screwups galore and crappy customer service. The credit card company had to fix their triple billing problems. I am now registered through register.com and am quite happy with them. I'm sure they are not the cheapest anymore, but I'm not sure who is. The five-year registration is a lot cheaper than annual.

I use dnbuy.net for $8.87 per year. Yahoo also offers domain name service for $2.99 per year at http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/, don't know what restrictions yahoo may have or service omissions at that price though.
Once you have a domain you need someplace to host it and that is another charge of course.

My first registrar was Network Solutions years ago, I hated doing business with them, they were so secure I could never get anything done, just plain awful!

Thanks for the replies guys. Right now I'm just thinking about reserving something for later. It's less expensive than I thought.

Shortmagnum:
If I remember correctly "internic.net" is the regulating authority. Believe you can view to see if the URL you are thinking about is already used or send in a query.

I use register.com and have 3 url's registered with the pointers to odyssey.net.
The trick is to find someone to host it. Currently I use odyssey.net to host. It is my local dial up provider and I can access it from work for big up and down loads.
I like the local approach because I can go in and pat my foot on the floor plus other things when it all does not go right which is sometimes the case.
