Cougar sighting
This is another predator-meets-human story.
A friend of mine is a big, burly outdoor type fellow who likes to go fishing alone in remote areas. One day he hiked a few miles to a remote mountain lake near Mt. Adams in Washington state to go fishing. He had a good day and loaded up his backpack with fish.
As he was hiking out he heard crunching sounds in the woods that paralleled his path like he was being stalked. Chills ran up his spine as he stepped up the pace. He then heard a cougar growl. As he started to run he opened up his backpack and started tossing fish behind him to distract the cougar.
For whatever reason his tactics worked. But I can tell you, this guy was so scared he lost bladder control and he will never go in the woods unarmed again. I guess you've never really lived until you hear the growl of a big cat aimed in your direction.

Ok...we are going to have to institute some kind of rule. I can only deal with one animal thread per month, especially if it also has guns in it. :]
But as long as we are here............ The hills in California and Nevada are full of mountain lions these days.
The last reported interaction around here was about a mile from my house. Someone just over the hill lost a goat to a mountain lion earlier this year.

Mark, you're having one heck of a day! 2 animal threads and a the 3 wheeler thread surfaced again. Curses!!  Before you know it someone will revive the dreaded Beaver Dam thread! Think I'm gonna go outside and pile up a huge mound of leaves with the backpack blower and jump into the pile. Blow off some steam. Works for the kids.

We have quite a few 'cougar' sightings around here also, they are most often seen at malls, fitness clubs, and bars, although these ones seem most attracted by the smell of money, kind of like 'dock beavers' in that respect.
We have lost a few 'old goats' to them also.
Luckily though the sound of a diesel, especially a CUT is most frightening to them, and they quickly retreat. Strange though, certain 4 wheelers seem to attract them, especially the shiny ones like BMW's, Jag's, Mercedes and Land Rovers.
 MAO.
I'll bring the beer, Chief's bringing the leaves, jump-off at 3pm sharp.

Cougar sighting
I haven't seen any cougars here in NM. I used to see them occasionally in CA and I would find tracks and other signs right up to suburban areas.
One of the most chilling photos I have ever seen was taken by a husband of his wife and baby in a wilderness park in very suburban Orange County California. In the weeds in the background of the photo, you could see the full face of a cougar just watching. It was chilling because other children and adults had been attacked by cougars in that area and because the husband did not even know that the cougar was there until he got his photos back.

Cougar sighting
Unlike a bear. Cougar routinely tract humans as they are inquisitive. I gave only caught the odd glimpse of a tail in the wild but often have known I was being watched.
Before this get out of hand the link below has the documented attacks and deaths from 1890-1990. Note the largest percentage occurred in on Vancouver Island (V.I.) or B.C. where I grew up and worked. I can not say that I ever stayed up night worrying about it, even though I knew people that had been attacked.
If Murfs black bear stats make it look infantile to worry about it, then the less than 1 death every ten years and the 1 attack every 2 is merger. Most of the attacks I know of were hunters that had tracked the cougar.
Personally the only thing that worried me was the wolverine when I got near a muskie smelling brush piles and the large deep foot prints in the moss that were either a very large grizzly or a sasquatch.

I wouldn't lose sleep over being attacked by either a cougar or a bear. However, if I was attacked I don't think I'd try to argue fatality statistics with them either

I picked up on the pic. When my wife heard the story she grabbed a National Geographic anniversary book her father gave her, found a pic and said here. It was a diver studying gray reef sharks. His partner snapped a pic from the boat. The pic shows a large shark with huge mouth agape below and behind the diver. Neither of them knew the shark was there until after the pic was developed. Gulp! At least the guy was looking for sharks and the shark was where it belonged--he just didn't know he found one or it found him.
The family pic is the more chilling but both are gulpers. It's also chilling to realize that predators are swift enough to figure out that the good life is where food is easy and they don't get shot at. Coyotes figured that one out real well.
