 Are Drill Doctors any good

I have two three-layer drill indexes and another box full of drill bits and it seems like every one of them is dull. After fighting a dull bit again today I started thinking about getting one of those Drill Doctor bit sharpeners. The local tool store has a model DD500PK in stock for $109, which is about what Amazon/ToolCrib charges for them. Has anyone here ever used one of these? Impressions?

Thanks, guys! I'll spring for one and give it a try. It's not so much for saving money, but it sure is irritating to have to run to the hardware store everytime I encounter a dull bit in the middle of a project.

There are different models - I'd get the one with two bit holders that will do much larger drill bits.

I've had several drill sharpeners and the Drill Dr is the best.

There are two features you want: as mentioned get the model with two holders for bits up to 3/4 inch (tractor size, don't you know).

When you do that, I think you will get the model that has consumer replaceable sharpening stones. The entry level models lack this feature and must be rebuilt at the factory.

Do they work? Hold unto your hat. I have NEVER seen a sharper drill bit than a one freshly honed on a Drill Doctor. The way they cut through hardened steel will most certainly amaze you.

I guess this is a yes vote. Just don't get the cheapie K-Mart model. But if you do, the company will give you a trade-in allowance when you upgrade.

Ken, I got mine thru a True Value hardware store on special a few years ago and they were 10 plus dollars below Northern Hydraulics or Great Plains at the time. I know mine is the two head system and I got it on sale at 89 while they were at 99 plus shipping at the time.

Ken, Just another positive vote. We have one at work and it's really nice to have sharp bits. The guys here really love it. Rather than just spinning the bit as it sharpens it revolves the bit at some angle which keeps the cutting edge the highest point. Bits sharpened with the D Dr have the same point shape as a new one. Some of the cheapies just spin the bit on the grinding wheel which makes them sharp but they don't cut well.
Dave

Art, I found a place online running a special on the model 500 with case for $99 but the shipping charges bring it up to the price at the local tool store.

I'll wander down today and pick one up. The model 500 doesn't have the second chuck for large bits but they sell it separately. Thanks for all the input guys!

Yes and I woluld buy the 750, it sharpens up thru 3/4" and
left hand bits also.
Mine included the left-hand(RED) chuck and a video tape
