 P S or Battery Charger

I'm an electronic tinkerer and would like to buy a variable power supply. At the same time I would like to keep the tractor's battery charged for the upcoming snowstorms.
Radio Shack has a variable p.s. that I have had my eye on since last year. It has a 10 amp capability (not sure at what voltage). So I'm wondering if I could use it to top of a battery or even recharge a battery. I'm aware that it wouldn't have the protection circuits that a battery charger would, so I would have to time it or keep an eye on it. I know battery chargers are relatively cheap, but extra money at this time is not present. I also hate redundancy and storage space is at a premium. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

I use one of those combination portable battery packs with jumper cables, worklight & air compressor. I keep it with me in whichever vehicle I'm driving. I have a high cylinder index (lots of combustion engines/batteries that can fail)it boasts power in winter for hard starting and helps in the dark. The unit is about $40.00-$50.00 and worth every penny.

Voltage is like water, there needs to be a difference to induce motion.

If the PS is putting out 12v. and the battery has 12v. it will not charge until the battery drops well below that point. If you put a meter on a battery charger you will find that it puts out 14++ volts.

They sell very compact trickle chargers that can be permanenty installed on a vehicle that are also very inexpensive, a good one is probably $20 or less in most places.

Ruining a good battery will cost you a LOT more than that.

Best of luck.
