wheelchair lift
hello all its john again. i need to ask you all for some insight on my problem here. and how to maybe proceed on a lift
for a wheelchair.
my lady lesia is totally disabled and has had multiple surgeries. she got injured when young and attending doc bungled procedure which led to many more.
anyway we muddle along best as we can. im sight impaired to make it even more fun.
when i met her she had a jazzy powerchair. very nice machine
to add mobility for a handicapped person. i managed to get a ramp on our home built. so she can get outside without me now.
we need some kind of lift to put in pickup. her car (saturn sl1)is not of capacity to hold any sort of lift. so being as im soon going to have to quit driving for good. i thought we would put lift in my toyota truck.
the chair weighs appx. 225# and i need to find plans to build some sort of post/crane type lift. or find a bargain used crane. manual or electric. i know some of you are masters of fabrication of things.
i was hoping maybe someone could draw out something that would function that i could piece together as we have very limited funds i have a friend that will weld it together but he has no design ability.
if you have a used lift that you want to part with, that you would let me make payments im honerable and my word is my bond. ask murf he knows this to be true.

John, I assume from your comments that you mean you want to be able to put the chair into the bed of the truck. I wasn't sure if you meant for your lady to get into the cab as well or not.
A very simple and inexpensive lift can be made from nothing more than barn door track and the wheel sets intended for the same purpose. The platform need be nothing more than plywood and 2"x4" and the lift power provided from a small hand winch of the type used on a boat trailer.
If you had a full-size truck I would suggest you look around for a used tailgate lift from a delivery truch but I don't believe they make such a thing for the smaller trucks.
Give me a little more detail of what you want, and want it to do and I'll happily putter at it some.

They have those lift cranes that mount in the back of a pickup in harbor freight for around $100. You would just have to make a platform for it. My uncle had one of those little carts and had an electriclift that would hook to his cart and lift it in the back of his van (of course someone had to hook the lift to the cart and use the remote to put it in the van. I bought the lift and took it out of the van. I didn't want it so I gave it to my dad, he said they paid like $1,500 for it installed. It will only work on the carts not the wheelchairs.

You might look around for a used van with a lift already installed. My friend with an electric chair has had a string of these and a has a old one rusting in his back yard at the moment. (I don't think that one is worth having unless you are a mechanic in search of a project, but there may be some that are.)
BTW, he's had several lifts in standard vans that used cables to raise and lower a platform (like "Ironsides" , but he likes the one he has now better - it slides out of the lowered floor in a minivan, and the van itself tilts if needed.
