Easiest Way to Stain House
I just completed putting down 25 gallons of stain in the poolyard area of my house. Now I want to start staining the right side and front of my house (Pic 1). I need to get up fairly high to do lots of the work and would like to do this as easily as possible. I am a weighty 200 lber and am not so nimble. I don't mind spending some money but don't want to rent a cherry picker at $800/week. Any recommendations? Rent scaffolding? Purchase 2 ladders and run a plank across both? Can I get anything for my 4310 and use it as an excuse to get another attachment? Any other ideas? Also, how do I walk around on the steep roof to get to the dormers, back of the chimney?

Save the rental money. If you spend the same money on a good airless sprayer, like a Graco, they have a long wand that will easily reach 16' up in the air. Besdies, then you own it for everything else you need to do in the future.
Depending on what your windows are like either mask them off through the opening or just spray them then clean the glass with a razor blade scraper after it dries.
I did my cottage that way two years ago, it took one full day, it took my neighbour 4 days with two people working full time.
Best of luck.

Murf, interesting idea. I didn't know that they made extension wands for airless sprayers. I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

I love real wood! My wife loves it even more! There is NO WAY in hell that I will ever go thru what you are. Your a good man!!! I will be building my next new house in less than 6 years from now and I am praying that in that amount of time they come up with a really great looking viynle that looks like the real thing. I stained my garage the other weekend with a sprayer (again) Second time in 2 years this one will last a few (I hope) I cant imagine all the work you are putting into your place. Although I love the way your place looks, when I see it thru my eyes I see alot of staining (tranlation, work) . Hey when you get some experiance want to come over and do my 450' of shadow box fence? I feel "some" of your pain!
Good luck!

Brokenarrow, I wanted vinyl also. My wife never wanted to build from scratch so we had to buy. Since she has sooo much stuff she won't get rid of, we had to have a large basement. This basement is 30x60 and there is an additional huge loft over the garage. So I was stuck with the cedar. You are right - sometimes I wonder if it would be cheaper to have the cedar ripped off an vinyl siding put on - but I am not sure it would go well with the architecture of the house. I have chosen my own form of torture!

I might add that I used a single set of clothes that I never washed to put down the first 25 gallons. On the last day I had a pretty good idea that one of the cats had their way with my shoes. But, undeterred, I was committed to finishing in those clothes (Arrrgghhh!). I never felt so good as when I showered after the last gallon and threw the clothes out.
I am committed to choosing another set of clothes to stain the front of the house. I will not wash them for the duration of the work, no matter how many days it takes. This way I will have no friends and no places to go. Then I will relax by the pool. !

Spraying on a "calm day" is fine to apply your product,
but if you want it to last, you should brush it in.
The brush will push your product into the wood grain and
force the penatration as opposed to laying on the surface.
Spray only looks good for a couple of years,if you brush
it you should get 5-7 yrs.
pressure wash everything first, let it dry two or three days.
Spray it till it runs down the wall and then push it in
with a high quality 5-6" brush.
Ask Sherwin Williams.
Unless your real comfortable on the roof, stay off it.
Hire the high part done.
My wife's uncle fell 8' onto the blacktop and spent three
months in the hospitol. but he save $200.00.
