TECUMSUH GENERATOR CARB ADJUSTMENTS
I have just purchased a generator with a Techumseh 10hp horizontal engine. The engine runs rough and bacfires even when warm. The carburator has been generically set at the factory with no adjustments. Will a regular carb repair kit fit after I remove the factory jetting? Does anyone have a solution or options to this problem? The Techumseh dealers I have called told me to call my congessman because it's the EPA there is nothing they can do!!

I have a Coleman 5KW generator with the 10hp Tecumseh and so does my dad. Both generators run perfectly. It sounds like you might have gotten a bad one. I would return it rather than mess with a carb kit.

I have a 5kw generator with 10 hp tecumseh and it ran rough when I first got it. On the bottom of the float bowl there is a very sensitive adjustment for the carb. Normally about 1/4 turn either way will smooth the engine out. It is a bit trickey to adjust if you are not under load. Once you get it right the engine will run smooth with or without a load and will not surge.

Scott, Take it back. That is what the warranty is for. It can be difficult to adjust these, without being under load, and my guess is, if you put it under load it will die. Yours may have caps over the adjustments, depending on the carb used. Not worth it if something else is wrong other than adjustment. Outta time can also make it backfire. That can be the cam or the spark. Not worth fixing, get a new one, and preferably with another brand of engine. Always had more trouble with that kind than others in the long run. I have the 10 HP Tech and it runs smooth, (loud but smooth). More than likely the seller of your generator is going to send you to the manufacturer - it seems with y2k nobody is accepting returns - you have to deal with the manufacturer. Tech only made the engine - deal with coleman or generac or whoever put their name on the entire assembly, they should help you out.
On the noise front, I put a 4 cylinder tractor muffler on in place of the tin can that came with the system - much more civilized!

Thanks for all of the replies. I can be more specific. There are NO adjustment screws on the carburator, NO hidden plugs like on early eighties carburated cars and light trucks. This 10hp engine has fixed removable jetting, I have taken apart the carburator. I can rule out timing and spark or mechanical properties of the engine-here's how; When the engine is running I can manipulate the choke lever to get the engine to run smoothly/ indicating a fuel air mixture problem. Yes plenty of fuel flow and the float is set correctly. This engine will be used at sea level and up in the mountains of Maine, How do I compensate for the difference in air density at higher elevations without adjustments (main and secondary mixture screws)? If your engine runs great you may be at the optimum elevation and air density. The engineers who designed this non-adjustible carburator had to pick certain specifications to try to compensate for all conditions, not reality. I am hoping someone out there has performed a retrofit or knows if the Techumseh standard carburator repair kit with main and secondary mixture screws will work.

I own 3 of the Coleman 5Kw generators with the 10hp Tecumseh, also bought 2 for
my father-in-law for business not Y2K one of them had the same problems you talk
about. I brought it back to Builders Square they replaced it no questions asked. I have used one of mine in the mountains of Colorado camping with no problems with atmosphere corrections. You just got a bad unit it happens. Just to bad you messd with it you really should have returned to the dealer.

There is something wrong with the genrator, look at valve timing or spark timing if it backfires. That means lots of unburnt fuel is finding its way out the exhaust port. The dealer is right you can't change the jetting without violoating the law. The carb does not need to be rejetted. It is jetted properly for the operating RPM of the generator. Unless you are at an extreme altitude there should be no need to rejet. A geneator won't be able to tell if it is at a Denver altitude or a Miami altitude, and it will run fine either way. The mfr's are good like that. Get a Generac, they rock.
