12v batteries storage on concrete --- urban myth
I was taught to never store a 12v battery on concrete. To do so discharges it through capacitance and destroys it permanently.
Yet I go to the local parts house and they have metal racks on concrte floors holding batteries ready for sale.
My master mechanic buddy says that's sort of true, but batteries discharge while installed in the vehicle anyway on their own even if the vehicle is not on (through the pos and neg cables)

It's a myth with today's batteries. Here's a link (myth #2 on the page) but there's many more on google. When I used to sell batteries this story was always passed on but nobody ever had a good explanation for it.

Jeff, from what I've learned and discovered over the years, the story (myth) got it's origins in truth, if not well-founded truth.
In other words batteries stored on concrete did die prety regularly, but the concrete was not the cause of death.
It seeems to be a two-fold problem, one, was that the old batteries liked to be worked, if you stopped charging / discharging them, they would die pretty quickly, unfortunately the second part was, when a used battery was removed from service, it was usually set on the (concrete) floor.
So, for lack of a better explanation, people started to beleive storing them on concrete was the cuase of a 'perfectly good battery' dying, when in reality it was near death already, taking it out of service was just the last straw.
Your mechanic friend is slightly wrong, the discharge is caused by a combination of the corrosion on the surface of the battery being a slight short-circuit, plus the draw of the 'always on' electronics in the vehicle, and the lack of charging (use) while sitting.

Actually, batteries will discharge on a concrete floor if left upside down in a puddle. Pa-da-dum.

Klein, I would have leave it sit there upside down for awhile then? So just spilling out it quickly won't have that same effect?

Note: If you mix water with the instant coffee in the morning, you will find this probably won't happen as often.

Editor note: Well okay it looked good in my mind when I thought of it. On "paper" is a dif'rnt story.
Instant coffee? Yer jokin'. When they come out wit dat? All this time I've been suckin' on the beans.
