 12v Operated garage door openers

Does anybody know if someone builds a 12V operated garage door opener?

I'm planning to build a pole building and use a generator as the main power source when I need lights, etc. I'd like to be able to open the door without starting up the generator.

I'm not sure how they work(inverter or 12 volt motor), but I've seen ads for several of the big garage door opener manufacturers advertising that their systems have a "12 volt backup system" that allows your garage door to function withoutelectricity.

Mind you, pulling the little hanging handle and lifting has always worked fine for me. Wink yeah right

Best of luck.

Murf,

My uncle has several 12volt garage door openers on his cattle gates, which he uses for feeding cattle during the winter. (He no longer has to brave the -40 degree weather just to open and close a gate.) They're set up to use a garage door opener, with remote from the tractor cab, and are powered by a 12vdc motor. The battery box is insulated and heated, and the battery is recharged by solar power.

Let me ask my uncle where he found the gear. I'll get back to you soon.

Joel

I don't know of any manufacturer who makes them offhand. (Probably not that popular, plus you're pulling a lot more amps.)

If you really want to go that route and can't find one, couple of options:

1. You can buy a 12vdc to 120vac converter.

2. I haven't checked the amp draw on a garage opener ecently, but you can also buy a UPS with the proper amp rating and get a few openings out of it before having to charge it.

Jason I have a 3500/5000 watt 12vdc to 120 vac convertor I bought on eBay for less than $215 inc. shipping. It's mounted under the passenger seat of my pickup. It draws so much power that both (it's a diesel) batteries can be discharged within about a half hour under peak use without the engine running. I can run a 9-inch grinder, or a 1/2" hammer drill, or a 6-peak-hp shop vac on a 100' cord no problem. So using one a garage door opener, which I'd guess to be less than 15 amps, should be a snap.

Murf,

If you can still find an ONkor 3000, you'll have exactly what you need.

This is a battery backup system made for all 1/2hp (110vac) garage door openers. The ONkor 2000 was made for 1/3hp openers.

You might have to find a used one, as I don't believe they're being sold any longer. Possibly some other company makes a similar device.

Murf,

Here's one that might work for you. It opens a garage door using batter power, up to 20 times on one charge.

The only drawback I see, sir, is that this thing appears to be made to fit a specific garage door opener. (Liftmaster -- Estate Series)
