Transporting air compressor
I need a new air compressor for my shop and found a guy locally selling a nice upright compressor. Can those be laid down horizontally for transport? I know the oil may drain into the cylinders, but if it stands upright for a few days before starting it up will it be OK?

They are normally shipped on a pallet up right. Is it oil less or oiled. If it has oil it is a bit like sitting a four cycle motor on its side. The oil can seep past the rings and fill the heads. You could blow the heads off or burn up the motor.

It's an oil type. If the heads fill with oil then won't it drain back down when standing upright for a few days? It works that way with refrigerator compressors (so I've heard).

I'd take the cautious route and try to transport it upright. It's just not worth the risk of damaging it. If you can get into your pickup and tie it upright, that would be the way to go. Doesn't mean you can't lay it down for a few minutes while unloading.

I am trying to avoid taking the canopy off the truck. I just recently got all the leaks around it sealed and don't want to undo the work. Maybe I'll just rent another truck for a day.

Why not just drain the oil standing up, transport it lying down, then fill it with fresh, new oil?

Adding to Earthworks post. Let is stand for a few days, turn it over by hand to make sure it is free and then start it up.

Great idea guys. Draining it first sounds like just the ticket. Thanks.

Now why didn't I think of that?
Especially when I think of everything!
