Piano hits wall - how to repair damage
I had to clear out my living room to have hardwood floor installed. As it happened, during this process the piano decided not to cooperate and its edge hit the living room wall, creating an irregularly shaped hole approx 10" x 5". How do I repair the hole in the drywall? Do I have to replace an entire drywall panel, or are there other ways to repair smaller areas of damage?

It's probably best to cut a minimum sized rectangle out of the wall to the first wall stud on each side of the hole. Score to half way across the studs and break out. Cut a patch from new drywall (It's probably doubled sheets). If there are no electrical wires in the area, pack the area behind the patch with wadded up screening or something to support the back and nail the patch to the wall studs. Then, fill the joints, tape and paint.
If the old dry wall isn't standard thickness, I've used metal or dry lathe and built plaster up level to the old surface (allow for shrinkage though). For smaller holes, I've just backed with wadded screen and plastered up to level. The wall probably is a home-owner job, the piano probably needs a professional tuner.

I just realized that I made an assumption that the hole is open so any electrical wiring present can be seen. Under no circumstances should anybody ever cut into a wall cavity blindly unless there is absolute certainty that no wiring is present.

How to:
You many need to buy 1/2 a sheet of dry wall if you can not find a small piece.
1) check for wiring or plumbing in the section of wall.
2) cut a rectangular hole in the dry wall.
3) Cut to the stud on the right and left of the hole.
4) Cut a piece of dry wall to fit into the hole.
5) Mount the piece of dry wall into the hole, with drywall nails or preferably dry wall screws.
6) make sure the heads are below the surface of the wall.
7) Tape the wall, using mesh tape.
8) plaster over the cracks.
9) sand excess
10) apply second coat of plaster
11) sand excess
12) apply third coat
13) sand excess
14) run from mate with vacuum and white power on face.

When I patch a hole, I use a couple pieces of 1X4 or sheet metal to strengthen the joints. These are slipped behind the remaining drywall, and held in place with screws through the solid drywall so they lap the back side of the joint - halfway on the old drywall, half on the new. The replacement piece of drywall then has something behind it so it can also be screwed in place. The mesh tape seems to work better for me. If you feather the compound out a ways from the patch, it will be less noticeable..............chim

This is what I did and works great.
1. Make the hole slightly bigger by making it a square or rectangle.
2. Cut a piece of sheet rock about 2 inches bigger then the hole you just made.
3. With the piece you just cut, take the gypsum off but leave the paper on the hole that is bigger then the opening, and dry fit into the hole.
4. Put joint compound on the back of the paper for the patch. And apply to the hole and overlap the paper with the joint compound.
5. Wait for the joint compound to dry, and apply several coats to build out the wall to match the patch.
You are done
