On the west coast a french drain around the parimeter of the basement was manditory. With hundreds of inches of rain you don't need to be a genius to know why.
Cutter what is the American drain? Is that what you had prior to fixing it? It seems to be the style I have seen in the states. In New England we moved into a new townhouse. They had set the duplex over a spring. Everything in the basement was set on pallets to prevent damage. The floor had a 1/4 inch of calk on it as the water in the basement had caused the float on the floor to be excessive. They had jack hammered up the floor and placed a parimeter drain around the interior wall. The sump ran nearly continuously.
I have a lot of clay here so I used a geofabric over the drains to prevent them filling with mud. In addition we placed clean outs to the ground surface at the corners to aid cleaning the drains periodically.
I used the insulated concrete forms for the walls of the basement so there is no sweating of the walls. Naturally we must have air conditioning there so there is little dampness in the summer.
The temperature swing here are so extreme with the humidity from the gulf that after a cold night the humid air can fill the barn, covering the cement floor with water and causing it to rain inside.

It's an inside joke Eric.I installed a French drain.
AC, I don't know why people do these things. I assume the builder did what the customer asked since he had owned the property prior to building, so the water problem had to be evident. The person I purchased from is the same one that told me the roof and chimney were in excellent condition when I asked. He portrayed his family as simple country folk, held bible study in the family room as well. The chimney was cracked in several places and had to be lined. The first time it rained hard, I found the plastic trays in the attic crawl space he had put there to catch the water. I'm much more skeptical of the human race in my middle age, still do business with some on a handshake but most strangers are more closely perused by me these days.
To sum it up, the roof is new, the downstairs dry, the chimney lined and I have electricity this week. Life is good.

Cutter;
Although I had a contractor inspect my first house it caught fire due to some one ignoring fire codes during construction.
My second house, was less expensive but I had to put in an expensive septic system due to failure to follow codes.
My third house burned after 4 months due to an electrical fire. (possibly lightning fire) I found the septic tank was also not to code.
My fourth house I built to replace the third.
I do not enjoy building but I will not have another mess again.

Just returned from the fireman's banquet. A few cocktails and a good dinner with old friends, it does not get much better.
I have been straightening out the messes here for almost eleven years. If I move again, it will be into a dwelling built to my specs or a condo in Vegas. I'm with you Eric, too much heartache and $$ to do this again. I will reach the point I imagine whereby I will not be able to take care of this property, but my youngest is interested in it so we shall see.
Thick fog coming off the lake tonight, supposed to clear Sunday. Have to roll the lawn and do some trim mowing so I hope the man is correct in his prediction of sun. Only two more trees to take down in the yard from the ice damage, glad I bought that Stihl 260 last winter, has not missed a beat.
By the way, my message notification is not working, is yours?
