 Getting Rid Of Woodchucks

How do I get rid of woodchucks that keep digging under the edge of my pole shed? Don't suggest shooting or a dog because I don't own either. If I try to live trap, what do I use for bait?

Sorry. Probably stepping on political toes....

Buy a .22 and shoot them.

If you want to be kinder, gentler and politically correct, then learn to live with the destructive little shits.

Never had much luck trapping groundhogs (woodchucks). If you dion't want to shoot them yourself, I'm sure you could find a local hunter that would like to sharpen their long distance varmint skills. We had them in and around our barn and they were really making a mess of the floors and foundations.

My grandfather used poison gas bombs that you poked holes in both ends, stuck in a wick, lit it, and put it down the hole. He also used to put a rubber hose on the exhaust of his '71 GMC with the other end in the hole and let it run for a while. He said both were effective. I prefer to use a Marlin .22 magnum with a scope...I like to see the proof I guess. Trivia fact...did you know that early pioneers in Indiana preferred ground hog to other wild game due to the tenderness and full flavored taste. Groundhogs do eat only plants (like other animals used for human consumption). I have also been told that they generally have enough fat in the meat which makes it tender. I personally have not tried it...but thought you might enjoy this little fact. Has anyone actually tried this??? Wendy's new phrase to compete against Hardee's could be "We serve only 100% pure American groundhog." (Maybe that would only go over in Southern Indiana and Kentucky!!! I live in southern Indiana with relatives in Kentucky...so it's ok.) The rest should probably stick with Angus beef.

I have tried it and it is not too bad. You have to get over thought of what you are eating to actually say you like it.

I believe Gemplers sells the smoke bombs and you can go online to see their catalog. I don't think they are toxic, just displaces O2. My neighbor trapped over 36 last year with conibear(sp.) traps. They open to a square that goes over the hole. When a creature sticks its head in, it snaps closed choking them. Good for muscrats in ponds to, I got 5, 2 years ago, more tearing up the pond this year.

Yep, they can be frustrating. I've got pocket gophers myself. Satans minions they are.

Here's a product (expensive) that is sure to kill them. I'd like to buy one for my gopher problem. I used poison in the tunnels for my gophers. Worked, but it's time consuming to use if you have a large population. Do you have a friend with a large snake you could borrow?

In places in New Hampshire they call them "whistle pigs" and are on a few menus with gravey and all the trimmings.
I was tempted to try it, but even after 12 shots of tequila
I couldnt muster the courage Smile so I had more tequila..

If WI wasn't so far from VA I'd be on my way over with my new Bushmaster AR-15 Varminter/scope....I've been ithching to put it to work. A Ruger 10/22 will do, though. I get some here in my suburban creek bank with a Ruger MKII .22 pistol.

A few years ago on the farm we stumbled on a really good bait/poison. It was a pesticide called Furidan, long outlawed because it seemed to kill lots of birds, and anything else that came in physical contact with the purple granules. Varmints picked it up on their feet and fur, carried it back to the den where they dined on their last meal.... Some info at http://www.safe2use.com/ca-ipm/0099-10-22.htm or http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:Gb7a8ndhxKAJ:www.fresnometroministry.org/lhcc/pdfs/RT_Notes_10-15-98.pdf+furidan&hl=en
