Chainsaw bar oiler won t oil

My Craftsman 18" chainsaw's bar oiler won't oil, cutting chain and putting in shop will cost almost as much as a new one...Does any one have any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting

The usual reason is dirty oily sawdust blocking the oil passage. I'm not familiar with your Craftsman to know if it's better to work from the bottom or the top. But you might consider blowing it out with compressed air. It might be messy, but should get the job done. Since the crud is usually built up at the bottom, I'd blow compressed air into the oil reservoir and hopefully force the obstruction out from the top.

In addition to Gregs comments: check the oil passage ways on the bar.

Never had a chainsaw that didn't need an hour of servicing for every hour of working. Just dissassemble and clean.

Or, I never trust push-button oilers (and especially automatics) anyway, and just stop every minute or so and squirt oil on the groove.

auerbach You need some different saws. Even when I'm blocking skidded wood 5-10 minutes each hour touch up with file only, fuel and oil. Turn bar and flat file bar with new loop maybe 30 minutes once a week. If saw I used needed that kind of maintenance it'd be in scrap pile. I'd hate to see what loggers here would do if they had that kind of maintenance requirement.

Or is it the person that pushes the button you don't trust?

Either you have too much time on your hands, or you must not use a chainsaw much in the winter. Ever try to "squirt" bar oil when the temperature is below freezing?
