Thanks for the sympathy.
Unfortunately my white Jetta was a $500 car to begin with, and to insure it with comp and/or collision, my ins co wanted a professional appraisal and other "hoops" jumped through, so I said to h#ll with it and just went with liability.
Damage: Grill, right headlight, hood, right fender, maybe radiator support and right inner fender support. I hit HER (Too small to keep, but big enough to cause damage!)right in the head with my right headlight, so her behind swung around and distroyed the entire fender, but luckily not the door. If I can find a cheap fender I'll try to fix her.

i'm told that deer bolt into your vehicle at nite because the moving shadow of the deer caused by the headlights makes it jump away from the shadow.
one of my son's hit 11, yes eleven deer one year with his old 51 chev. p.u. and it had deer whistles. go figure.

I bet the hood and fenders on a 51 chevy are about the same thickness as some of todays bumpers.

Mark, I bet you are right about that! !!! AV8R, if you can get the car repaired, you might want to consider a "buck stopper" bumper/grill guard. Some guy over on the TDR is working a group purchase.

Naw, not really worth it. I think I'm gonna sell her to someone who wants a project. Got a new fender and headlight for her, but no time to install. Any takers??

Sometimes when they get that old and that much mileage; it cheaper to keep her. I have a 1987 Nissan Puslar NXSE with about 145,000 miles on it that I keep just to put around locally with. I would get anything for it selling it and I still get the value of cheap transportation out of it.

A local fella here is the fleet supervisor for mthe local police force which is a regional force, the equivalent of a county sheriff's office. They cover a huge area, rural and suburban. He claims that deer strikes with cruisers decreased 75% after adding deer whistles to the fleet. At first they weren't working but the manufacturer came in and explained they were mounted wrong. Apparently incorrect mounting will render them absolutely useless.
They must be mounted in such a way as to get full exposure to the oncoming air, ifthey are in an eddy current or low spot where there is a vacuum instead of a jet of air they do nothing. The bigger the vehicle the worse the problem to find a suitable mounting location is, big trucks make big air turbulence.
Generally he said the best place they found was the top of the light bar. They have a few Yukons and Expeditions they use for special units like the K-9's and rural patrols and he said they use the top of the side mirrors for the whistle mounts.
Best of luck.

I haven't hit a deer ..... yet.
I did put a full grown female moose through the windshield of a Ford Crown Vic at highway speed. On the cosmic balance scale that has to be worth at least ten deer strikes.

Thanks Murf! I'm gonna give that a try. That sounds like a valid theory. I had been mounting them on the bumper.
