100K PTO Generators on Sale
It seems like we have power failures at least monthly. This latest blackout makes me appreciate the frequent outages - we are now prepared for them and just accept outages as a matter of course. It's harder when they occur while we're out of town, but I'm working on a fix for that.

100K PTO Generators on Sale
With the power falures we've had from ice storms and just wind we've had a lot of people buying generators. There is good and bad with them just like everything else. Generac has not been the best name in this area for longevity. For a house and a temporary unit it might be fine. My neighboring dealer sold a mess of them to the farmers in the area and took the bulk of them back, as they couldn't handle it and failed. I don't know what part failed or that much about the brand but it seems like they either work well or they don't work for long at all. From what I've been told there is only two companies that make the generator bodies. One is very good and the other one is considered nearly disposable. I was told that it is not the engine alone that makes the price difference but the generator bodies have a big price difference between the good and the lesser one. I guess beware when buying as you think you are buying a security blanket when it might only be temporary. It seems strange over this past nite as we had a couple second flutters but never lost power sitting right in the middle of it all.

I've looked online and have read nothing but good reviews on Generacs. I did read on an RV forum of a past problem with faulty oil safety switches that caused shutdowns. Just a case of a safety switch being too sensitive and causing shutdowns riht after startup. There was a way to bypass it and Generac replaced the safety switches.
The standby systems should alert you too any potential problems as they start themselves and run once a week for 7 minutes or longer if you specify. 2 year 2000 hour warranty as well.

The HP to run one is sort of an old issue now but I'll comment anyway. The theoretical horses needed for a theoretical KW is around 1 1/3HP. The 2HP/KW rule of thumb provides for some slippage between the theoretical and real worlds, a pad to accommodate surges and also doesn't require an engine to run flat out for extended periods.
Pure speculation here, but I've always heard this rule of thumb applied to small engine generators but it might be a bit rich for larger generators. If the generator mentioned is a very good deal, a large farm tractor might run one OK. There'd be the issue of weight and inertia of a large generator on the pto clutch, but smaller breakers probably could be installed to limit the HP requirements.
