Joey3Springs,

How long has it been since you took an air hose to the radiator?

Blow out the radiator very thoroughly, using care not to damage the radiator fins in the process.

Once you've done that, check the electrical connections on your temperature sensor, fan motor, etc. It sounds to me as though there may be slightly loose electrical connection somewhere in the engine cooling circuit, since your cooling fan works intermittently.

Aside from these things, you could have a thermostat that's sticking shut, or not opening fully. It's also possible that you may be a bit low on coolant, though I suspect you've already checked that.

Also check to make sure that you don't have a collapsed radiator hose, which would severely restrict coolant flow.

Lastly, your water pump could be going bad.......but let's not jump to conclusions here. Let's address the easiest and most common problems first.

Get back to us as soon as you investigate a few of these things.

Joel

Joey3Springs,

I forgot to mention that you should also check your radiator cap. In fact, it might be a good idea to simply replace it.

Believe it or not, a faulty radiator cap can cause all kinds of problems with the engine's cooling system.

Joey didn't say if his Gator is a gas or diesel, if it's a gas engine it's got an air cooled engine in it, unlikely it would have a problem with the water pump, radiator or rad cap.

Sensor or something is more likely the culprit in that case.

Best of luck.

If it is a 6x4 it is liquid cooled. The most common reason
for overheating on these is the engine block is not full of
coolant even though the radiator and bottle is full. This is preventing water from getting to the pump to circulate.
Not sure about the diesel but the gas has a small screw just
behind the carburetor on the top of the engine block.
With the engine running, slowly fill this hole with coolant.
Fill it right to the top and check it often at first.
This solved my problem and was never an issue after that.
As far as the radiator fan not turning on. It is most likely
the hot water is not getting there to sense it needs to be on. Or the switch is bad. Good luck.

THE GATOR IS GAS NOT DIESEL.

Maybe they don't know what they're talking about, but the JD website says the gas-powered Gator has a 19hp air-cooled Kawasaki engine in it.

Best of luck.

My 6x4 has a radiator, hoses, water pump and a cab heater
that uses water running through it to keep me warm so I
am assuming it is a liquid cooled engine.
My brother has a 2x4 that is air cooled.
Maybe the old AMT model is air cooled??
Let us know what the problem was.

Could this be a belt problem? I have an HPX which was overheating, as well as experiencing some other problems. Anyways, I discovered that the belt cover was cutting into the belt which didnt break it, but caused enough problems between the alternator and water pump to cause overheating. It might be worth removing this cover to give everything a look.
