i have a motor from a 2wd john deere gator motor made by kawaski and ive been thinking about using on a go kart and am curious as to how the stator works on it. ive been told that it recharges the battery, but also that it doesnt. correct me if im wrong but do i also need a battery to sustain the ignition system too right?

jeinhuaus, that is an interesting post you have. Can't quite figure what you want, but I'll try. I'm thinking you have a FE290 or FE250 motor. The stator on both charges the battery thru the regulator, which keeps the voltage in check so nothing burns up. It's nice to have a battery since Gators don't have pull start. The engines will run on a bench, or anywhere else for that matter, if you can get them started. They get their spark from the flywheel magnets passing under the coil which turns into high voltage to fire the plug. This is a completely seperate system and has nothing to do with the stator. The stator is the basis for the charging system to keep the battery charged, but the motor will run without it even being on there. Also you can have a starter on it and not have a stator or charging system, the battery just won't get charged. One thing you would need is an on/off switch hooked to the lug on the coil to shut it off. Have fun.

you've answered exaclty what i was asking. i have a fe290D. i just heard that the gator that this motor came from ran an alternator and was also told that it was need to keep the system alive. so to connect this stator to the battery what should i look for? and this regulator you speak of do i already have it or would i need to construct one if i were to use the stator?

If you have the Gator there should be a 6 prong plug coming out of the harness hanging somewhere around the passenger side frame rail opposite the motor. That is the plug the regulator plugs into. It should have a red, a black, 1 or 2 yellows and a couple more. You need a 4x2 regulator so that plug will match. If you want to email me or put your email on the site I can get in touch with you and maybe get you going. I have all the parts you need.
