 Compression Gone in Rear Cyl

We have a 6X4, got it in 1996, gas model. Had an ongoing prob with the back plug fouling, JD sent us a tech memo that changed the plugs to an NGK and gapped at 40. We put this unit into heavy use, winter in the forest. Last week it dropped the rear one again, chg plug did not fix. Did a compression ck and 160 in front and near 0 on the rear. Looks like either a blown cyl or stuck valve. Has about 575 hrs. Thinking about a new motor, see where there are some upgrades in HP, on at 27 and another at 20. Did JD upgrade or is this strickly after market?

There is a repower kit on line for around 2500.00. There is a 27 HP out there like you say. Check thegatorguy.net for rebuilt motors.

Stopped at the JD Dealer and got the parts breakdown sheets on the motor and valve train. Took the valve cover off and the push rod for the intake valve was loose. The valve was real spongy when depressed, not returning like the ex one. Took the cyl head off, pulled the keepers and removed the intake valve. At first it would not come out smoothly, like some kind of glue got in there. Took some cleaner and then it worked ok. The rubber seal under the spring is suspect since it looks like it might have moved upward, seems like it should have moved down but not sure how this thing is installed. Still cannot get the lower retainer up over it. Will call and discuss with dealer in the am.
NOTE Even after replacing the push rod and cycling the engine I did not get a really high comp reading. But all parts on the lower end look good.
Will keep post with resultz.

Just take a screwdriver and pry that old seal off. There is a lip on the valve guide that holds it on. The new one just fits down over the lip and the little spring around it holds it in place. Maybe when the valve wasn't working properly the seat or the valve face got damaged. You could have damaged the head gasket too. Is the push rod bent? The valve springs wear out also. You really aren't gaining anything if you take that bottom retainer, as you call it, off. It is just a locator for the valve spring, nothing under it.

OK, took the head off, cleaned up everything, got the new seals, gaskets and reassembled. The valve, push rod all look straight and in good shape. Dealer was most helpful.
Waiting for the new oil filter to arrive by wife express from town and then will see how it all works.

Both intake and exhaust valves need to be at .010 cold.
