I would say if you want a trail machine, get a 4 wheeler. They are set up to go fast, they have stiffer springs to corner better, their center of gravity is lower and they handle better. Have a shorter turn radius and are easier to steer. If you want a good Gator, buy an XUV, I did.

Do you think I can plow snow equally with either one (the XUV Gator vs an ATV)? And also I'm considering the Polaris Ranger. The bigger model will hit 53 MPH I hear! Do you think that model would be a good cross between the XUV and an ATV? Thanks!

I think you can plow better with an XUV. We just had a big snow around here and my son used his HPX with a V plow and he was very pleased at how it performed. He did most of the plowing in the V position and then finished it off with it in the straight blade configuration. I don't have any experience with the Polaris so I can't say anything that will help you.

I still don't understand what a "turf gator" is. I just bought a 04 model 4 X 2. Is that considered a "turf gator"?

Grandpa, basically a Turf Gator is a push-on-the-gas and go. If you have to sit and start it and put it in gear to move, it is not a Turf. If you have a 2004 Gator it should have round headlights and be a T series. If you have rectangular headlights it is pre 2004 and a 4x2.

Guess I never posted the finished product so here it is. I sold it about a month ago. I was going to buy a new XUV 825i but I emailed the nearest JD dealer to see if they had one in stock and they didn't bother to reply so I will go buy a Rhino instead.

gatoraider,
Thanks for the info. I can see that this site is going to be a great source of info. The guy I bought the gator from did not have the owners manual. I ordered one from the JD website. I don't want to do much until I can read the manual. Mine has rectangular headlights, so I guess it's a 03 model. I called JD customer service and gave them the VIN. Even with the VIN they could not tell me for sure what year it was. They thought it was an 03 or 04.

purplewg,
Thanks for all the info you have given this new Gator owner. I hope I never have to attempt what you have done, but at least I now have a better understanding of the transaxle.
