1999 JD 6X4 keeps smoking fuel stop solenoids
It used to cut off when it was hot and not start up. The battery always dies also. Then one day the fuel stop solenoid started smoking. I bought one off eBay, not a JD part, and it worked great for a week. Now it is smoking and I don't want to buy another $200 part if something before it is the issue.
Please help

There are two circuits going into the fuel shut off solenoid. The pull voltage is the wht wire and the hold voltage is the red wire and the black is ground. I'm thinking you must be getting pull and hold at the same time. Pull voltage should stop when the ign switch comes off the start position. Check with a test light. If the white wire stays hot you could have a bad start relay or a bad ign switch. Hold voltage comes directly from the ign switch and should be there in the run position.

You are 100% right! The white wire gets voltage sometimes when it is in the run position. The ignition is loose and I have to jiggle it sometimes to get it to catch.
Now the question is where can I get the part cheap?'
Also, where is the starter relay located?
Mine has 2 wires coming to one before the connection to the Red on the harness to the fuel stop solenoid. I didn't trace where they come from yet.
Thank you so much,
D

I think ign switches are less than 20.00 from the dealer. The start relay is one of the three on the right side frame rail.

I have replaced the ign switch and the start relay but both wires stay on when it is in normal run position. Is there a voltage that each one should be at? Is there anything else that I can check?
If the start relay is unplugged then the white wire has no power so I know it cannot be a short.
Does it take a few seconds or minuets to shut off( white wire)?
The dealer said that it is actually a 1996 6x4 diesel.
Thank you again for all the help

If your diesel is a 1996 it has a different harness in it, and has another relay in it. It is the coil cut out relay. I assume it is on the frame rail with the others. It has 2 white, 1 purple, and possibly 1 tan wire going into it. If this relay is bad or intermittent it could hold voltage to the white wire. That relay gets it's power from the purple wire that comes from the neutral start switch and before that from the ign switch. There seems to be an external diode in the tan ground wire that may come into play also.

It turns out, after replacing both relays, the ignition, and 2 fuel stop solenoids that the wires in the pipe under the seat were damaged. This is why it was so hard to figure out.
Thank you all for your help.

I know this is an old posting, but I am having the exact same problem with my 2003 Gator 6X4 diesel. I just smoked a new fuel solenoid, after replacing the orginal. I was wondering if you could describe in more detail what you found in the wiring harness and where to fix the problem. Was it the purple wire for starting shorting to 12v somewhere? Did the starter also run when this happened? Or was it near the engine and the white wire that powered the pull in part of the fuel solenoid?
Thanks,
Ken
